"Thus, a good man, though a slave, is free; but a wicked man, though a king, is a slave. For he serves, not one man alone, but, what is worse, as many masters as he has vices."

FROM OUR OFFICERS

A LETTER FROM THE PROMOTER

Fr. Augustine Hilander, O.P.

"During the month of January, I spent six days a week for four weeks at St. Albert’s in Oakland in meetings discussing the legislation of our Province and appointments for important roles. It is our Provincial Chapter held once every four years. It was my first time at a provincial chapter. I went as prior of Blessed Sacrament Priory. It taught me a lot about our Dominican government and I want to share a bit of the fruits of this contemplation on this provincial chapter."

ALL ARE WELCOME

Mr. John Keenan, O.P.

"The Church’s divine mission is to preach the Gospel to all sinners. The Church upholds its mission by maintaining the truth, its doctrine and the biblical teaching of receiving the Holy Eucharist worthily. The Holy Sacraments are an objective and efficacious sign of the grace that accompanies the Good News in our walk to and with Christ. Many Christians and non-Christians alike are deeply hurting and need the salve of Truth and of the mercy of God in the Gospel—not the ideas of the modern world. "

GLOBAL ACTIVISM AS THE CHAPTER APOSTOLATE?

Mr. John Keenan, O.P.

"As a result of this effort, a controversy arises as to whether this global-level active network is biblical, practical, accords with the Rule of the Dominican Laity, and whether it is the best use of the individual lay Dominican and each chapter’s time, energy, and intelligence in the effort to bring justice to the world."

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Mrs. Helen Nguyen, O.P.

"What I landed on is – God is in control. Sometimes, He gives. Sometimes, He takes. For us to try to understand would be somewhat impossible. And for that I surrender. I give over my ability to try to understand or control the situation and have to just trust. "

WHY I LEFT THE SOCIETY OF ST. PIUS X: AN OPEN LETTER TO FR. GOŁASKI

Mr. Andrew Bartel, O.P.

"[...]I do not understand why you implicitly recommend your example to all of us in your decision to join the structures of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX). I can only surmise that this is because, as of yet, you know only the favorable facade which this priestly fraternity and its associates present to the world."

SAINT FOCUS: BL. CRISTOPHER OF MILAN, FRIAR AND PRIEST

Dominican Friar and Priest.

Blessed Christopher was born at Milan around 1410. He dedicated his whole life to itinerant preaching after the example of Saint Vincent Ferrer. The austerity of his life and his zeal for souls led an ancient chronicler to say of him: "He was truly a Christ-bearer, for he carried Christ not only in name, but in his heart and on his lips." While master of novices for the Dominican Order he wrote a treatise On the Service of God for them. He died at Taggia in March, 1484.

THE THEOLOGY OF JORDAN PETERSON

"The controversial Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson has a notoriously complicated relationship with the question “Do you believe in God?” He famously claims that “I act as if God exists,” while treating God as such a transcendentally obscure concept that merely affirming or negating his existence would be crass.”

THE FIRE ON THE ALTAR

"The Rite of Ordination today does not involve setting anyone on fire—for obviously good reasons—but this account from Leviticus presents a powerful image of the Holy Spirit igniting the heart of the priest. The priesthood is not a matter of doing, but of being."

INSIDE THE WALLS

"At the risk of comparing the Catholic Church to the House of Mouse, I’d like to propose that something similar happens inside the walls of a monastery. Standing in the cloister garden, the only hint of the outside world is the blank sky. The four walls do, in a sense, shut the monk into a different world."

IS MARRIAGE WORTH THE FIGHT?

"In June of 2015, the Supreme Court, in a 5-to-4 decision in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges, declared that the U.S. Constitution contains a right to same-sex marriage (SSM). Immediately, any and all laws to the contrary became unconstitutional."

HAVING A GOOD / BAD LENT

"Lent should remind us – we’re often told – that all of us are on a spiritual pilgrimage, whether we know it or not. It’s good to be reminded of that, but it can make it seem that a “good” Lent will be orderly, peaceful, gently leading us to “see God” more clearly. That’s so, sometimes. But is a “good Lent” only one that meets our expectations? Strangely, sometimes a “bad” Lent can be better."

DEFENDING LIFE
As Catholics, we believe in the inherent dignity of human life. Issues such as abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide and the culture of death are continuing to be prevalent in our culture today and directly attacks our stance in defending and protecting the most vulnerable people in our community. Here you will read the latest life respecting news.

'ABORTION DOULA' AT NOTRE DAME SPEAKER SERIES ADDS TO CATHOLIC CONCERN

"In the wake of the Dobbs Supreme Court decision overturning the pro-abortion rights Roe v. Wade ruling, several bodies at the University of Notre Dame are hosting an event series dedicated to “reproductive justice.” The series has attracted criticism for its decidedly pro-abortion slant: an “abortion doula” with a tattoo of abortion equipment is one of the speakers at its next event."
