A LETTER FROM THE PROMOTER |
Fr. Augustine Hilander, O.P.
"St. Thomas Aquinas is both one of the most important saints of the Dominican Order and the Church, as well as one of the most imposing. We see in him the Common Doctor of the Church, but also one who dazzles us with his intellect. One who is for everyone, but one who no one can really master. "

Professions and Life Professions from the Our Lady Star of the Sea - Bremerton, WA group.
Eight of our Laity chapters in Southern California came together at St. Dominic in Eagle Rock on August 5th to listen and learn and discuss St. Thomas Aquinas. Fr. Michael Carey, OP spoke about St. Thomas Aquinas on the soul and Fr. Augustine Hilander, OP spoke about St. Thomas Aquinas’s friendships and some of his ideas about friendship. It was a great time to participate in the indulgence offered by the Order within these two years.
Here is the schedule. Hopefully other regions of our Lay chapters can put together something like this. It was a great success. Please speak to Fr. Augustine Hilander, OP about this.

SAINT FOCUS: BL. JANE OF AZA, MOTHER OF ST. DOMINIC AND BL. MANNES
|
Blessed Jane was born of the prominent d’Aza family and married Felix de Guzman. Three of their children spent their lives in the service of the Church: Anthony, Mannes and Dominic. An early source describes her as “virtuous, chaste, prudent, and full of compassion for the poor and the afflicted; among all the women of the region she was outstanding for her good reputation.”
According to tradition, Jane had a dream before her son’s conception in which she saw a hound racing through the world igniting everything with a flaming torch. Troubled by this dream, she went to pray at the Benedictine abbey of San Domingo de Silos, located in a pleasant valley about twenty miles north of Caleruega. This dream was indeed prophetic. Dominic did ignite the world with sacred truth through preaching and teaching born from a life of dedicated prayer, love for the Word of God, and a burning desire to gain souls for Christ.

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA, A PATRONESS OF TEARS |
"An important lesson we learn through Catherine’s complex interplay of metaphors throughout The Dialogue is what she describes as stages of various kinds of tears. The tears of the wicked; of fear (for those who repent, though imperfectly); tears of sweetness; of love; she even speaks about tears of fire."

"DO NOT HOLD ME": WHY UNITIVE LOVE MUST BE CHASTE |
"Here’s a version of the traditional hagiography of St. Mary of Magdala, or of Bethany, as the medieval Church, including St. Thomas Aquinas, knew it. It’s based firmly in Scripture, but fills in some missing details."

EYE TO EYE: A LINEN CANVAS WITH CHRIST CARRYING THE CROSS FOR COLOMBA. BETWEEN ART, DEVOTION AND SAVONAROLA |
"The object that most attracts the eyes of visitors to the ancient Umbrian art exhibition is a rough canvas, almost 6 and a half feet high and just around 5 feet wide, on which Jesus is painted carrying the cross known as the Redeemer of Blessed Colomba."

BEHOLD THE TRUTH OF CHRIST'S RESURRECTION WITH EYES OF HEART |
"Whereas in his nativity Christ demonstrates the mystery of his own virgin birth, in the resurrection he gives a pattern to all who are to be resurrected on the last day—a pattern of new life after death. These two miraculous events, which are peculiar and proper to Christ our Savior, have never stop resounding in the world over the past two millennia."

BEAUTY IN THE CATHOLIC TRADITION |
"True beauty leads by steady steps if we allow its power to work on us and lead us to the ultimate source of beauty, Christ. Show the Sistine Chapel or Chartres Cathedral; show someone how to read Brideshead Revisited, the stories of Flannery O’Connor, the poetry of T.S. Eliot; listen to Beethoven’s “Seventh Symphony.” Show the great tradition of beauty. It’s not as threatening; it draws people in."

MANY THINGS ARE NOT PERMITTED; EVERYTHING CAN BE FORGIVEN |
"In any conventional telling of a story like this, the offended man, back from the dead, would certainly be intent upon revenge. But in the Gospel story, the man who had been hurt as fully as a person can be hurt, returned in forgiving love. And let us press the point, for the person in question was not only a man but also true God."

"FREED FROM SIN", AND CHRIST IN OUR WEAKNESS |
"There was no more profound moment in any of our lives than the moment of our baptisms.
For many of us, it was unchosen, and we were not aware it was happening, and still in that moment — by the imposition of water and words — God worked profoundly, to claim us as his own.

"No wonder, then, that St. Paul could rhapsodize on the beauty of marital love as a great mystery, indeed the sign of Christ’s love for His Church. Contraceptive intercourse, on the other hand, lies about both the God of the covenant and the children of the covenant."

CALIFORNIA BILL WOULD MAKE INSURANCE FUND UNLIMITED ATTEMPTS TO CREATE MOTHERLESS AND FATHERLESS CHILDREN |
"California’s proposed bill is not unlike other recent attempts in Minnesota, Washington, and nationally to treat children as items to be cut and pasted into any and every adult relationship. But this is the inevitable result of equating two things that can never be equal: opposite-sex and same-sex relationships."

"St. Laurence said: 'I offer myself as a sacrifice to God for an odor of sweetness." The executioners continually stirred up the fire and brought fresh coals, while they still held him down with their forks. Then the Saint said: "Learn, unhappy man, how great is the power of my God; for your burning coals give me refreshment, but they will be your eternal punishment. I call Thee, O Lord, to witness: when I was accused, I did not deny Thee; when I was questioned, I confessed Thee, O Christ; on the red-hot coals I gave Thee thanks.'"
