2020-21 Record Book Update
The 2020-21 Record Book Manual for Members and the related forms are available on the State 4-H website.
The Adult Volunteer version of the RB Manual will be available in early October.
There are moderate changes to the Leadership Development Report. We added more specific instructions on how to write goals and strategies and added some minimum word requirements to the written sections. There are other minor edits related to the sunset of the Online Record Book. A minor instruction addition on the Annual Project Report about making the "what I learned" statement their own.
Yahoo has stopped supporting groups, so we have opened a private Facebook Group to replace the Record Book Support Group. If you belonged to the old Yahoo Group, or would like to belong to the community of Record Book discussions, please join the Facebook Group

State Fashion Revue Update
State Fashion Revue Committee invites all interested members and leaders to join us as we plan for SFR 2021. Our kickoff meeting is via Zoom on Thursday, October 15 at 6:30 PM. The link is posted in our Collaborative Tools group or you may email [email protected] for the information. The committee is planning for a virtual event at this point but would love to host it in-person if the COVID restrictions are lifted. Youth chairs for 2021 are Emily Lavell and Gianna Lovell, both from Sonoma County. They have a big job ahead of them this year, so please join the committee to help them out!
Do you have suggestions for holding sewing project meetings within COVID guidelines that we could pass on to other leaders and counties? Please share your ideas with us!
2021 State Fashion Revue is open to County Winners at 2021 County Fashion Revues in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior age divisions, in the 5 state categories. The categories are continued over from 2020 as many counties were unable to host their events. We encourage all county event committees to be planning for virtual fashion revues for 2021, in case the restrictions are still in place.

The State 4-H Office has added two new Advisory Committees:
The State 4-H Advisory Committees provide leadership and offer insight, review, and input to the Statewide 4-H Director for the operation and management of the 4-H Youth Development Program.
THANK YOU to the staff, youth and adult volunteers on our Advisory Committees who have spent their time in many Zoom meetings and discussions to develop updates and adapt activities to share with everyone.
Your work is helping 4-H continue to give youth life skills.
Applications open until October 15
Youth (ages 14 and up), Adult Volunteers (ages 18 and up) and County Staff are encouraged to apply!

4-H STEM Challenge (formerly National Youth Science Day)
Mars Basecamp
|
|
Mars Base Camp will explore sending a mission to Mars and what it takes to sustain human life in space. Both educator and family-sized kits will include four activities:
- Landing Zone Surveyor is an unplugged activity where kids will attempt to land on Mars and discover features that are important for setting up a base camp.
- Red Planet Odyssey is an unplugged activity where kids will use engineering skills to build a vehicle that can explore the surface of Mars.
- Crop Curiosity is an unplugged activity where kids will learn about biology, environmental science, and agriculture to grow nutritionally efficient food on Mars.
- Insight from Mars is an activity that can be done unplugged or online that teaches kids to code and share a discovery they made on Mars using CS First and Scratch.
Kits are available in Educator and Family Size.

Facebook Live Q&A with 2 NASA Scientists - October 14
Two NASA scientists out of the jet propulsion lab in CA are going to join us on October 14 at 4 PM PST (7 PM EST) for a Facebook Live Q&A. This will be announced on the 4-H Facebook Page soon. They’re producing a short 5-10 minute video using their Mars Trek and narrating some of the cool things we’ve discovered on Mars, places kids will discover during Mars Base Camp activities, etc. That video will be followed up by a live Q&A with Brian Day, science lead for NASA Solar System Trek, and Emily Law, project manager for planetary science at JPL."

Your team of astronauts is stranded on Mars. Your supplies are dwindling. How will you survive, and how will you return to Earth? At the 2020 STEM Summit, students will work with peers and group leaders on a variety of workshops and exercises built around solving this main problem. Each collaborative exercise will test and strengthen both the STEM skills and the teamwork and collaboration it takes to solve complex problems in the real world – and on Mars. |

These class’s will be held at the Safety First Shooting Association, River Oaks Range, 11584 Shaffer Rd, Winton, 95338, in Merced County. This class is being hosted by Merced County 4-H.
Certification: You must become a 4-H leader and attend both days to receive certification to teach your selected Shooting Sport at the project, club and camp levels. While we invited Jr and Teen Leaders to attend in years past, due to current UC limitations this training will be limited to adults as we can only have 9 students. If you have Teen or Jr Leaders we will discuss in class how to get them trained up to assist you better.
The course will include a PowerPoint lecture, review of equipment, practice shooting and teaching, and a written test.
Registration: The cost is $35 per person. You will receive a resource binder, with a light breakfast both Saturday and Sunday. Please bring your own lunch to the class.
