Root Cause

COVID Rules for Patient Visits

Dear friends,

If you are even slightly symptomatic or have tested COVID positive in the past 10 days, please do not come to the clinic seeking care. We are not first responders and patients coming to the clinic for IV therapy or in-person appointments must be protected. Thank you for observing this important rule.

We are following the protocols as set by Sutter Health.

  • We are still offering either in-person patient visits or consultations via Zoom or FaceTime. Your choice.
  • Masks are required in the clinic. No more temperature checks upon arrival.
  • Intravenous therapy is still being offered to non-symptomatic patients in our office. New IV patients are also welcomed.

Please phone for information: 650-961-1660

What this newsletter is about...

Root cause: One of the six principles of naturopathic medicine is "Identify and Treat the Causes." Yes, we can also offer effective symptomatic relief for most conditions, but without addressing the factors that gave rise to the original medical condition, the underlying pathology can continue to exist unaddressed.

In this month's issue of the Pacific Naturopathic Newsletter, Dr. Connie offers her thoughts on the depth to which a physician must understand the cause to effectively decide upon a therapeutic course; Dr. Marcel addresses what is known about the causes of cancer; and Dr. Connie writes about the importance of discovering a patient's vulnerabilities that give rise to the medical condition.

You will also find our usual columns on thermography, our Hawaii vacation rental, the wonders of the Myers cocktail, medical humor, inspiration and more.

Once again, we would like to welcome Dr. Brian Cox and Dr. Krystal Shelmire to the Pacific Naturopathic team. The experience and skills they bring greatly expand therapeutic offerings available to our patients. We are repeating articles they wrote about for our newsletter a couple of months ago. The articles show just a bit of the skills and experience they bring.

Dr. Marcel's new book on prostate cancer is now available! Scroll down to read more about it!

Of course, you'll find our regular updates on our Hawaii vacation rental, thermography, health products we like and the wonderful Myers Cocktail. Humor and and inspiration also have their own regular places in the newsletter.

Think happy, healthy thoughts!

Find opportunities for laughter!

Express love and appreciation often!

Dr. Connie's musings...

Getting to the

Root of the Problem

by Dr. Connie Hernandez, ND

We often say that naturopathic medicine is not cookbook medicine. A variety of remedies may be helpful for any given condition. Deciding the most efficacious remedy requires understanding the origin of the problem.

Take, for example, the sudden development of a terribly sore throat. Slippery elm lozenges soothe the throat. Licorice tea also does so and is antiviral and immune stimulatory. Zinc lozenges are immune stimulatory and anti-viral. Xylitol is antimicrobial as is raw organic manuka honey.  A thin cotton cloth soaked in ice water, wrung out, and wrapped around the neck will often alleviate the pain of a sore throat. Saltwater gargle reduces inflammation.

While these remedies may play a part, it is essential to consider the root cause in treating the condition. The cause may be environmental, such as the irritating particulate matter circulating in the air during forest fires, or contaminants in the heating or air conditioning system. With air pollution, wearing a filtering mask helps prevent the inhalation of the particles. Indoor causes may be addressed by servicing heating and cooling systems or avoiding gas heating.

Dryness of mucus membranes prevents effective immune response, and may result from dry weather, heating and air conditioning, dehydration, or autoimmune dysregulation, making a person more vulnerable, and causing throat pain. Allergies and food sensitivities also often cause throat dryness.  Subsequent sore throats are most often due to congestion resulting in postnasal drip. Irritation may also result from gastro-esophageal reflux. To treat, find and eliminate the allergen or sensitivity.  Treatment for a congestive sore throat requires treatment of the congestion with an anti- inflammatory, immune stimulatory diet, the avoidance of mucus producing foods and the taking in of mucolytic foods and supplements. Treatment of irritation from acid reflux requires strengthening the gastro esophageal sphincter and preventing the reflux in the first place.

A sore throat may result from an encounter with a microbial organism. With a particularly virulent organism, an antiviral or antibiotic may be required. Many essential oils are both anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial.  Reactive responses to any organism also depend on the receptivity of the host. In an immune compromised person, even a less virulent organism may cause dramatic symptoms. However virulent, treating the immune status of the patient is important to recovery. (Does the patient have low iron, low thyroid, stressed adrenal function, low vitamin D levels, low white count, compromised mucus membranes? Addressing any of these will help protect the patient.)

On an energetic level, blockages in energy flows in the body cause symptoms and impair recovery. Treatments like acupressure, acupuncture, and homeopathy stimulate the free flow of energy.  Home treatments include any of the breath movement exercises, such as restorative yoga, tai chi, or Chi Kung.  Flower essences are another energy-based treatment that specifically addresses the emotional underpinning of a symptom. The energy center connected to the throat is the throat chakra, and throat chakra issues include not feeling heard or not speaking your truth. Yogic asanas such as the lion’s pose and the plough direct cleansing energy through the throat chakra. Other energetic treatments specific to the chakra may include treatment with the color blue (as in a lapis lazuli necklace or a blue scarf wrapped around the throat) or chanting the AUM vibration in the throat chakra.

The ultimate root cause of any illness is the lack of alignment with the Vis Medicatrix Naturae, the healing power of nature, prana, spirit, God, or whatever name you choose for that all pervading and perfect energy source that is within us and surrounds us. Alignment may come through meditation, chanting, prayer, service.

While alleviating a sore throat can be a simple matter, the sore throat will return again and again if root cause is not addressed.

Causes of Cancer

Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

Cancer is caused by errors in DNA genetic transcription influencing how cells in the body are born, grow and divide.

Normal cells have a DNA programmed life span, and when they die, they are replaced by other cells patterned by the same genetic code.  When the DNA code is damaged,  cancer cells form that grow uncontrollably and form tumors that can spread to other parts of the body.

DNA damage that can lead to cancer has multiple causes:

1. Chemicals.  Between 2015 and 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that the cancer rate on the planet grew by 57 percent. They associated this with a dramatic rise in the use of untested chemicals in industry and consumer products, including food growing and processing.  DNA can be damaged by natural and man-made chemicals in the environment, called carcinogens. These chemicals are found in asbestos, components of tobacco smoke (which contains over 50 known carcinogens), aflatoxin (a food contaminant), asbestos, arsenic (a drinking water contaminant), herbicides, pesticides, food preservatives and coloring, paints, clothing, plastics… the list goes on and on.  The WHO estimates that more than 160 million chemicals are known to humans. About 40 000 to 60 000 of them can be found in commerce and 6000 of these account for more than 99% of the total volume of chemicals in commerce globally.

2. Physical carcinogens, like ultraviolet rays from the sun. Up to 10% of invasive cancers are related to radiation exposure.   Medical use of ionizing radiation is a growing source of radiation-induced cancers. Ionizing radiation may be used to treat other cancers, but this may, in some cases, induce a second form of cancer

3. Biological carcinogens, such as infections from certain viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Approximately 13% of cancers diagnosed in 2018 globally were attributed to carcinogenic infections, including Helicobacter pylori, human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and Epstein-Barr virus.

4. Lifestyle choices like diet, alcohol consumption and physical activity. Together, diet and obesity are related to approximately 30–35% of cancer deaths. Dietary recommendations for cancer prevention typically include an emphasis on vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and fish and avoidance of processed meat, red meat, animal fats, and refined carbohydrates.

In Western Europe 10% of cancers in males and 3% of cancers in females are attributed to alcohol.   In particular, alcohol use has been shown to increase the risk of developing cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx, larynx, stomach, liver, ovaries, and colon.

Individuals who eat red or processed meat have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, prostate cancer and pancreatic cancer.

The relationship between diet and the development of particular cancers may partly explain differences in cancer incidence in different countries. For example, gastric cancer is more common in Japan due to the frequency of high-salt diets and colon cancer is more common in the United States due to the increased intake of processed and red meats

5. Hormones are important agents in sex-related cancers such as cancer of the breast, endometrium, prostate, ovary, testes, thyroid and bones. For example, the daughters of women who have breast cancer have significantly higher levels of particular estrogen metabolites and progesterone than the daughters of women without breast cancer. These higher estrogen metabolite levels may explain why these women have higher risk of breast cancer, even in the absence of a breast-cancer gene. Similarly, men of African ancestry have significantly higher levels of testosterone than men of European ancestry and have a correspondingly much higher level of prostate cancer.

6. Chronic Inflammation can lead to DNA damage over time and the accumulation of random genetic alterations in cancer cells. Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk of developing colorectal cancers.

7. Not all types of electromagnetic radiation are proven carcinogens. Low-energy waves on the electromagnetic spectrum including radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation and visible light are presently thought not to be cancer-promoting because they have insufficient energy to break chemical bonds.  But the jury is still out on this as interesting new studies are emerging.  Radiation from mobile phones, electric power transmission equipment and lines and other similar sources have been described as a possible carcinogen by the WHO.

Reducing the burden. Between 30 and 50% of cancers can currently be prevented by avoiding risk factors and implementing existing evidence-based prevention strategies. The cancer burden can also be reduced through early detection of cancer and appropriate treatment and care of patients who develop cancer. Many cancers have a high chance of cure if diagnosed early and treated appropriately.

Ozone Therapy: Effective and Safe -- Now Available at Pacific Naturopathic

by Brian Cox, ND
When you hear the word “ozone,” you may immediately think of the ozone layer in our atmosphere that protects us from the ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are what create ozone (O3).

Ozone is an energized form of oxygen which contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two we normally breathe. Ozone is the second most powerful sterilizer in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odors. Interestingly, ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms. In fact, the “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm most often results from the creation of ozone.

How does ozone work?

The third oxygen atom of ozone makes it extremely reactive, and it readily attaches itself to other molecules. When contaminants such as bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, the ozone creates a minuscule hole in the cell wall. After the ozone breaches the cell wall, the bacteria are unable to survive. This process is called “oxidation.” Once used, ozone reverts to oxygen, making it a very environmentally friendly oxidant.

Isn’t ozone a pollutant?

Unlike stratospheric ozone, which forms naturally in the upper atmosphere and protects us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, ground-level (or tropospheric) ozone is created through the interactions of both human-made and natural emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the presence of heat and sunlight. Cars and gasoline-burning engines are significant sources of VOCs, which also come from consumer products such as paints, insecticides, and cleaners, as well as industrial solvents and chemical manufacturing. NOx, the other chemical precursor of ozone, is produced whenever we burn fossil fuels, primarily by motor vehicles and power plants. The sun’s direct ultraviolet rays convert these emissions into ground-level ozone, which is unhealthy to breathe.

Is ozone safe?

Ozone is safe when used under the right circumstances. However, if the proper safety measures are not in place, then high concentrations of ozone in the air can cause health problems. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), has stipulated that the allowable safe level of residual ozone is 0.1 ppm. Note that this permissible exposure limit (PEL) is for continuous exposure throughout an entire eight-hour day. If you start to cough when around ozone, there is too much ozone in the air, and you should remove yourself from the location or properly ventilate while remedying the cause of ozone in the air. Do keep in mind that it takes an extended period at very elevated levels to cause irritation to the lungs.

How is medical ozone produced?

There are two methods of producing ozone: ultraviolet (UV) and corona discharge. Corona discharge creates ozone by applying high-voltage to a metallic grid sandwiched between two dielectrics. The voltage passes through the dielectric to a grounded screen/ plate and in the process, creates ozone from oxygen present in the chamber. UV light creates ozone when a wavelength of 254 nanometers (nm) hits an oxygen atom. Both processes split oxygen molecules into single oxygen atoms (O). These atoms combine with another oxygen molecule (O2 ) to form ozone (O3 ), which physicians then use medically.

Why is Ozone therapy so effective with many issues, especially patients with cancer?

Dr. Cox believes that Ozone therapy is so effective for patients with cancer and many aliments because it helps to deal with the root causes of disease. For example, his experience as well as research has shown ozone therapy to be effective with helping to lower viral loads in patients. He has seen a correlation that when patient’s viral load(s) are significantly reduced, symptoms like cancer are also reduced or may even disappear in many patients. He finds that when patients are screened for viruses that have a correlation with various issues and some cancers, it is especially important to have their viral load tracked along with the relief of their symptoms for efficacy. Root Cause of Complex Chronic Disease

by Connie Hernandez, ND

These days, we are presented with numerous complex chronic diseases.

These diseases are difficult to diagnose with standard laboratory testing. Doctors are confused and may tend to tell the patient that the disease is all in their head, and that psychiatric treatment is necessary. The patient often then feels insulted and blamed for their illness, as they truly feel terrible. It is true that attitude plays a huge part in a patient’s perception of disease and manifestation of symptoms. Fear of the symptoms and concentration on the symptoms (obsessively looking for and fretting about the symptoms) makes things much worse. However, even if the patient has unknowingly created the disease, the disease also has physical repercussions which must be addressed.

Making diagnosis and treatment much more difficult, many complex disease syndromes share pervasive causes and similar symptom pictures. Mold toxicity, electromagnetic sensitivity, long Covid and other viral etiologies and Lyme Disease often present in similar ways.  For each one of these diseases, addressing the root cause is necessary.

For many people, exposure to a mold such as black mold can cause unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, light headedness, confusion, or digestive symptoms. A percentage of the population has a gene which disallows a healing response to the mold and can cause disastrous long-term symptoms. For people who are simply sensitive, finding and addressing the source of the exposure and removing themselves from the exposure can be a sufficient treatment. For others however, drastic measures may need to be taken. These people must move from their infested home, leaving everything behind, before they have hope of realizing an effective treatment protocol.

Likewise with electromagnetic sensitivity. For some, the sensitivity is an inconvenience. For others, using kill switches in their apartments, hard wiring computers, treating walls with EMF blocking paints, even sleeping in a Faraday cage may be necessary. Protecting oneself from EMFs in our technological world has become virtually impossible as we are constantly bombarded with electromagnetic frequencies. Some do manage a return to a more natural lifestyle in areas where wi-fi and 5G networks are not the norm.

When Lyme disease is chronic, the time has passed for the relatively simple immediate treatment of the acute condition. This also applies to long Covid. Nipping Lyme Disease or Covid in the bud is one step towards preventing long term consequences. But vulnerable people are left with long term consequences.

The problem then is discovering where in the vulnerability lies, treating that vulnerability and also addressing the consequent condition. One of our key naturopathic approaches is prevention of disease. (Underlying issues can be assessed on lab work, as on our Wellness Panel. In addition to diagnosing disease, the panel is designed to assess and address underlying issues in order to optimize wellness to prevent disease.) Underlying issues may also be understood and addressed through dietary and lifestyle evaluation, and sometimes through genetic evaluation. All manner of toxicity, lack of movement, inefficient breathing, and emotional distress are examples of lifestyle issues.

Among the typical types of concerns found in chronic disease are hormonal and vagal nerve imbalance, other neurologic issues, mitochondrial dysfunction. As we explore what ties these things together, we delve into the realm of disruption of energy. Electromagnetic stimulation including pulsed electromagnetic frequencies (PEMF) and simple devices like TENS units, light therapies, infrared lights, and sound therapies are increasingly utilized in the prevention and treatment of neurologic conditions in particular.

As we understand that we are energetic beings in a world of energy, we find that health and disease originate in an imbalance of energy. Matter is merely a reflection of a distorted energy field. The root cause is elsewhere. The future of medicine is all about energy. Energy derives from the Divine energy which flows through the healing power of nature. Attunement with the Divine, in which no energetic imperfection can exist, is the ultimate healing.

What is Homeopathy?

by Krystal Shelmire, ND

Homeopathy, also known as homeopathic medicine, is a medical system that was developed in Germany more than 200 years ago. It is based on two non-conventional theories:

“Like cures like”— the notion that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people.
“Law of minimum dose”— the notion that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. Many homeopathic products are so diluted that no molecules of the original substance remain.

Homeopathic products come from plants (such as red onion, arnica (mountain herb), poison ivy, belladonna (deadly nightshade), and stinging nettle; minerals (such as white arsenic); or animals (such as crushed whole bees).

Homeopathic products are often made as sugar pellets to be placed under the tongue. They may also be in other forms, such as ointments, gels, drops, creams, and tablets.

Treatments are “individualized” or tailored to each person -- it’s common for different people with the same condition to receive different treatments. Homeopathy uses a different diagnostic system for assigning treatments to individuals and recognizes clinical patterns of signs and symptoms that are different from those of conventional medicine.

How Does It Work?

A basic belief behind homeopathy is “like cures like.” In other words, something that brings on symptoms in a healthy person can -- in a very small dose -- treat an illness with similar symptoms. This is meant to trigger the body’s natural defenses. For example, red onion makes your eyes water so it is used in homeopathic remedies to treat allergies

Homeopathic doctors (who also are called “homeopaths”) dilute full-strength ingredients by adding water or alcohol. Then, they shake the mixture as part of a process called “potentiation.” They believe this step transfers the healing essence. Homeopaths also believe that the lower the dose, the more powerful the medicine. In fact, many of these remedies no longer contain any molecules of the original substance. They come in a variety of forms, like sugar pellets, liquid drops, creams, gels, and tablets.

During your appointment, a homeopath will ask a number of questions about your mental, emotional, and physical health. They will prescribe the remedy that best matches all of your symptoms. Then they will tailor the treatment for you.

Homeopaths generally begin with a consultation, which can be a 10 –15 minute appointment or last for as long as two hours, where the patient describes their medical history. The patient describes the "modalities", or if their symptoms change depending on the weather and other external factors. The practitioner also solicits information on mood, likes and dislikes, physical, mental and emotional states, life circumstances, and any physical or emotional illnesses. This information (also called the "symptom picture") is matched to the "drug picture" in the materia medica or repertory and used to determine the appropriate homeopathic remedies. In classical homeopathy, the practitioner attempts to match a single preparation to the totality of symptoms (the simlilum), while "clinical homeopathy" involves combinations of preparations based on the illness's symptoms. Homeopathy is both fascinating and effective.

The Adjunctive Cancer Program at Pacific Naturopathic

by Marcel Hernandez, ND

When welcoming a new cancer patient into Pacific Naturopathic, I tell them that like the four legs of a chair offer support for the body, the four components of our adjunctive cancer care program offer support for the cancer experience.

The first leg of the program is oral supplementation.  Regardless of internet hype, oral  supplements are not going to cure cancer.  Rather, they perform support functions like addressing nutrient deficiencies, decreasing inflammation, preventing angiogenesis, stimulating the immune system and, in some cases, causing some cancer cell apoptosis.

The second leg of the program is the mind/body connection.  This part of the program is the most difficult for new patients to understand and implement as western medicine almost entirely addresses illnesses on the physical level.  The scientifically proven fact is that stress undermines the immune system predisposes people to opportunistic illnesses.  Also, old tapes playing in consciousness that are reflective of cancer-caused anxiety contribute to poor outcomes.  We do have an extremely effective mind/body treatment program at Pacific Naturopathic, but few people take advantage of this opportunity.  Working on the mental/emotional level is just not part of our society’s approach to dealing with cancer.

The third leg of the program is the nutritional component.  The dietary approach for cancer developed at Pacific Naturopathic is mostly common-sense healthy eating – low carbs, lots of fruits and vegetables, adequate non-red meat protein, healthy oils, eating mostly organic and avoiding food additives of all kinds and more.  The foundation of the cancer diet is a modified Mediterranean diet, long regarded as the healthiest diet in the world.  For patients from ethnic backgrounds, we help them modify their traditional diets to be more in tune with cancer care.

The fourth leg is the intravenous therapy program.  The heart of the IV program is intravenous vitamin C, regarded in countless studies as therapeutically effective in treating most cancers.  We also offer IVs that address the peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy and IVs that address nutrient deficiencies resulting from the cancer experience.

Not mentioned above are other elements essential to cancer therapy like a consistent exercise program, having a dedicated support community and the importance of integrating a spiritual component into the overall scenario.

Breast Thermography

at Pacific Naturopathic

- The thermal risk rating -

Breast thermography gives us a TH number which is a thermal risk rating evaluation.

Neither the TH number nor the images of heat or vascular patterns gives us information as to what caused the problem, nor does it give a diagnosis. It is left to the patient and the practitioner to look for the root cause of a higher risk rating.

Lymphatic congestion (with its own underlying causes), inflammation caused by dietary indiscretion or injury, dental issues reflected in the breast, even cancer may create the picture.

One advantage of breast thermography is that after addressing the underlying cause, a subsequent comparative thermography can let us know whether the treatment has been effective. If the thermal risk rating is quite high, or a cause cannot be determined, and/or breast health does not improve with treatment, other diagnostics may be involved.

Unusual Medical Practices

Snake Therapy for Bubonic Plague

When the bubonic plague, or Black Death, swept Europe, many bizarre and sometimes horrifying treatments arose–none of which were successful.

A bacterial infection that infects the lymph nodes, bubonic plague is treated with antibiotics today. In fourteenth century Europe, faced with a disease that could kill within 12-72 hours of the symptoms’ onset, one doctor wrote: “Instantaneous death occurs when the aerial spirit escaping from the eyes of the sick man strikes the healthy person standing near and looking at the sick.” They just had no clue how to prevent transmission or to treat their patients.

One treatment called for killing a snake and chopping it up in pieces. The poultice was then smeared over the swollen buboes or boils. The reasoning was that snakes were evil, and evil is drawn to evil. The evil in the snake was supposed to draw the evil disease out of the person’s body.

How many modern medical practices will seem bizarre to people living 200 years from now? I could name a few.

Medical Humor: A Break From Reality
