Dear Sokol Members and Friends,
Sokol SF held its annual meeting on January 22nd and on that day I stepped into the local Czech community's largest "boty" (shoes), in the role of President of Sokol SF.
In doing so, I'm following in the footsteps of Jara Dusatko. For those of you who know Jara, you know that she is a true Sokol in every sense of the word. For well over a decade she has dedicated herself to the local Czech/Slovak community with all of her heart as Sokol's President. Like a true leader, as President she always encouraged us to keep the goals of Sokol in the forefront of our minds, to honor those who came before us, to give as much as we could give, to get along and - perhaps most importantly - to have fun along the way! As I was stepping into the role of President, I told her that if I can be half the woman she was in the position, I'd consider my tenure a success.
Sister Dusatko - on behalf of all of the members of Sokol SF, we thank you for your tireless commitment to Sokol SF and the community, which is forever impacted by your work and grace. (And, we're glad you're staying on as First Vice President!)
It is also worth noting that I step into this position with the support of an incredible board that has thoughtfully maneuvered through the pandemic, growing not just Sokol's membership, but also our events and engagement at those events. Kudos to all of you for what you've managed to achieve during such a difficult last few years!
With that, you'll see that Sokol SF will continue to do what we do best in the coming year - gathering in person when we can and virtually when needed. This year, I am personally most excited about the Day of Czech Culture that we are planning for the fall. It'll be a one day festival-style celebration, where we hope you'll join us!
Nazdar,
Linda Janourova
President

Virtual Membership Annual Meeting
Saturday, January 22, 2022 @ 4pm
|
|
Thank you to all who attended the 2022 Annual Meeting.
The Annual Meeting presented an opportunity for Sokol SF members to review the work of the last year, go over the finances, approve a budget for the coming year, and give input on the plans for the coming year. It was also an opportunity to vote in this year's Board of Directors.

At this year's Annual Meeting, two noteworthy changes took place within Sokol SF's Board of Directors structure.
The first (as you'll read more about in the President's message) is that after 12 years of service, Jara Dusatko stepped down as President. We are delighted that she will be staying on as First Vice President, allowing for a smooth transition of the new President in the coming year.
The second is that Helenka Livingston Teyrovsky also stepped down from the Board after 10 years of service. We are pleased that she will continue to serve on Sokol's Entertainment Committee, where we hope to twist her arm to continue planning the dinner dances that we've all grown to love and couldn't imagine without her impeccable planning skills!
We thank you both for your tireless dedication to Sokol SF throughout the years and all that you have done to bring our community together!
Please meet the new Sokol SF Board members for 2022:
President - Linda Janourova-Tang
1st Vice President - Jara Dusatko
2nd Vice President - Milena Harvey
Recording Secretary - Milena Harvey
Financial Secretary & Membership - Denisa Feddersen

Where the Wild Things Are
Saturday, January 22, 2022 @ 11am
|
|
Marka Mikova and theater group DAMDAM performed their "Tam, kde žijí divočiny" on January 22 to a large audience at Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto.
Marka and Šimon delighted us with a stage adaptation of the timeless story about naughtiness and misbehavior, and how even the biggest troublemakers come around seeking mom's appreciation and a warm hug.
With full house and audience participation, the puppet show brimmed with songs, laughter and the sound of a variety of musical instruments. Children from the audience became living and moving stage props and helped the puppets come alive. The performance closed to cheers and a long roar of applause. We already look forward to the next wonderful show that Theater DAMDAM hopefully brings to the Bay Area!

Czech banknotes issued between 1995 and 1999
will expire in July of 2022
|
|
The Czech National Bank (CNB) will terminate the validity of older banknote designs from 1995 to 1999. Unlike the new ones, they have a narrow silver stripe, the color of which does not change when tilted. The central bank is already gradually withdrawing them from circulation. Their exchange will be indefinite.
As of June 30, 2022, therefore, the validity of CZK 100 banknotes of the 1995 and 1997 designs, CZK 200 of the 1996 and 1998 designs, CZK 500 of the 1995 and 1997 designs, CZK 1,000 of the 1996 and 2000 designs of the 1996 and 1999 designs will expire.
CZK 200 for the 2018 model, CZK 500 for the 2009 model, CZK 1,000 for the 2008 model, CZK 2,000 for the 2007 model and CZK 5,000 for the 1999 and 2009 models.
Only for the 5,000 crowns with two designs continue to be valid.

Co dělat, když chcete pro své dítě narozené v cizině vyřídit české občanství
|
|

DEBUNKING A MYTH: Jaroslav Hašek's Death
February 6, 2022 @ 11am PST
Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences(SVU), New York Chapter
invites you to a free virtual presentation on February 6th @ 11am
|
|
This talk aims to expose and debunk a persistent myth surrounding the sudden death of the irreverent Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek, whose influential satirical novel The Good Soldier Švejk has been translated into more than fifty languages.
An analysis of the available documentation from the last weeks and days of his life demonstrates that, contrary to the prevailing belief, Hašek had been in stable health until the last few days of his life, and cannot plausibly have "drunk himself to death," as the myth has it.
Prof. Saman will present questions, arguments, and testimonies of Hašek's contemporaries, which he has analyzed together with medical expert Dr. Frank Loskot.
Event is free but registration is required:

COLD WAR OLYMPICS
A book talk by author Harry Blutstein, Ph.D.,
with special guest Olga Fikotova
February 27, 2022 @ 1pm PST
|
|
Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU), New York Chapter invites you to a free virtual presentation on February 27, 2022 @ 1pm PST
Harry Blutstein will introduce the US edition (McFarland 2022) of his book Cold War Olympics and discuss the cold war climate of the post-war Olympics focusing on two Czechoslovak cases that made the international news.
The 1948 London Olympics saw the first defection, as Czechoslovak gold medal-winning women’s gymnastics team leader, Marie Provazníková, refused to return home. In 1956, in defiance of her government, Czechoslovak discus thrower, Olga Fikotová, refused to renounce her love for US athlete Hal Connolly, creating an international incident. The book also exposes the activities of the KGB and secret police from Eastern European countries to spy on their own athletes, and counter measures taken by the West.
