Hike at Stanford University

Hike with us through the Stanford Campus, walking through eucalyptus groves, several specialized gardens, Rodin sculptures, as well as around some of the iconic campus buildings.

Places to stop for snacks or coffee along the way.
The hike will take about 1.5 hours; it is easy, level hiking in beautiful surroundings.

There are plenty of places to have lunch together (or separately)
after our hike at the nearby shopping center.

We will meet at the intersection of Vineyard and Quarry in Palo Alto, in front of the Container Store in the Stanford Shopping Center.

The button will take you to the intersection; just turn into the parking lot in front of the Container Store.

We are delighted to invite our community to meet Bohumír Janský and Eva Janská, who will be visiting San Francisco on their way to a conference (AAG) in Hawaii.

Do not miss this one and only opportunity to meet the highly respected geographer/hydrologist and explorer Prof. Janský who discovered the true source of the Amazon river, and a specialist researcher on Czech Diaspora and migration, Doc. Janská

We will hear about some great adventures, learn interesting facts about our 'blue planet', and be awed by people's determination to find their place to call home in the world.

The presentation/debate will be in Czech/English and free of charge.

Sokol San Francisco Speaker Series
January 24, 2024 @ 7 pm via Zoom
Dr. Jaroslava Salman, Psychiatrist

We would like to thank Dr. Yara Salman for a very informative and interesting presentation.

Listeners of our speaker series were treated to an informative and captivating presentation by Psychiatrist Dr. Yara Salman. Dr. Salman shared not only her own path into medicine and the field of Psycho-Oncology but also some of the common psychological challenges of cancer patients from the time of diagnosis.

Her book, co-written by Slovak journalist Viera Lipcak, "Hope Without a Guarantee", describes some of these challenges and showcases stories of patients who have faced these challenges.

View the Online Presentation with Zoom Player

Her book, "Nadej bez zaruky" is available in Slovak at these two online bookstores:
  1. Martinus Books in the Czech Republic
  2. Panta Rhei in Slovakia

We will also add this presentation to our Sokol SF Media YouTube channel soon.
Treasures from the
Archive of Sokol San Franciso
at the Consulate of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles
Consulate LA Treasures from the archive opening
During the last weekend of January, about ten Sokol SF members flew to the Czech Consulate in Los Angeles for the grand opening of an exhibit entitled "Treasures from the Archive of Sokol San Francisco." Numerous publications and various artifacts were on display for the exhibit, which had personally been sorted through and analyzed from Sokol SF's and private archives by Consul General Amb. Jaroslav Olsa, Jr. which commemorates more than a century of Czech expatriate activity in the Pacific region.

The opening exhibit was paired with a visit of the Special Envoy for Expatriate Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, JUDr. Jiří Krátký, M.A., and held in honor of the 120th anniversary of the founding of Sokol SF, as well as the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Pasadena Beseda.

We were delighted to connect with approximately 50 people from the Czech diaspora, including members of SVU, the Czech School of California, Sokol LA and
San Diego dance group Karicka.

Všichni si jistě vybaví pokyn „Vojáci, nazdar!“ a následnou mnohohlasnou odpověď „Zdar!“.

Consulate in LA is Looking for Old Publications

As you likely read in our last newsletter, the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles is trying to compile the most comprehensive collection of publications and memorabilia of the history of Czechs (and Slovaks) on the West Coast of the United States. Last year, he took over a large portion of Sokol SF's and other private collector's memorabilia, and a portion of those can be found today at the National Museum, Naprstkovo Museum, and the Library of Literature from individuals living in exile, Libri Prohibiti.

This leads us to turn to you, our readers, with an ask -- could you please let us know if you have any old issues of Sokol SF's Vestnik, Sokol Fresno's Vestnik, Sokol Los Angeles's Notes, or issues of the Czech Catholic Mission?

Moreover, there is also interest in one-off publications, flyers, and photos. If you are willing to donate these items (or allow us to borrow the items to be photocopied), please contact the Consul General directly at CzechConsulateLA@gmail.com or Sokol SF.

Thank you!
