Czech Christmas Cookies Virtual Demonstration
December 12, 2021
|
|
Thanks to all of you for joining us in our virtual cookie baking party.
We hope you enjoyed the three Czech Christmas cookie classics :
- Denisa's made "vanilkove rohlicky" aka "Vanilla crescent cookies"and "Islske (Brabantske) dorticky"
- Milena's "linecke cukrovi" aka "Linzer cookies"
Few notes from the demo chat:
- - for vanilkove rohlicky - walnuts have more fat than almonds, so if using almond flour add a little bit more butter; chop the nuts in a nut chopper or using a fine grater in a food processor
- - lazy-baker trick for the rohlicky dough from Miska: (which is cheating and maybe not allowed haha): I cool the dough into a long tube (like how you can buy Pillsbury dough) and when I pull it out of the fridge, I slice the roll in half lengthwise, and then slice into evenly sized half-moons. That way I don't have to roll each one, I just pinch it a little to get it into the crescent shape.
- - Linecke dough is very versatile - instead of lemon zest and vanilla extract you can use almond, orange, rum extract
- - vanilla sugar can be purchased at Cost Plus or you can put a vanilla bean into your sugar storage container.

Christmas Carols Singing
December 18, 2021
|
|
12 Sokol SF members and Friends of Sokol SF celebrated the season by getting together and singing koledy/carols.
Some koledy/carols were traditional, some less known but all were sung with gusto and were accompanied by Ondra's guitar.
Thank you Lea for your hospitality and wonderful refreshments!

The Largest Stadium in the World
Strahovsky Stadion in Prague
|
|
|
|
The Strahov Stadium was originally built for the Sokol slets/rallies. It was first used on July 4, 1926, for the VIII. All-Sokol Rally.
The stadium can hold nine football fields, the All-Sokol rallies, socialist Spartakiads, military parades and concerts were held there.
The first two Sokols slets/rallies after the Velvet Revolution were still held in Strahov, but another - in 2006 - was at the Rošický Stadium, which is also in Strahov, and the last two were held in Eden in Vršovice.
The Strahov Stadium is the largest sports stadium in the world with an area of 63,000 square meters and a capacity of 250,000 seats. This colossus has been on the list of cultural monuments since 2003. But its concrete grandstands are overgrown with grass.

Zlin and the legacy of Tomas Bata
|
|
There is a city in Moravia built by immigrants. Until the 1920s Zlín was a small settlement in the eastern part of what is now the Czech Republic. Then two brothers Tomáš and Antonín Baťa founded a shoe-making company, based it there and changed history.

Před 100 lety vznikla Velká Praha
|
|
Prvního ledna 1922 se Pražané probudili do jiného města. Počet obyvatel se ztrojnásobil, město se zvětšilo více než osmkrát. Z Prahy se stala evropská metropole.
