Sokol SF invites you to a Literary Competition
Sokol SF vás zve na LITERÁRNÍ SOUTĚŽ
submit your work by May 31, 2023
Zveme Vás na literární soutěž.

Napište nám BÁSEŇ na libovolné téma - téma které Vám je blízké.

Pravidla soutěže nejsou omezena: téma, jazyk, styl a délka básně.

A v srpnovém eVěstníku vyhlasíme vítěze.

We invite you write a poem on any topic you feel comfortable writing, employing whatever style you prefer.

The rules of the contests are limitless: topic, language, style, and length. Feel free to utilize the "code-switching" method, which means you can crisscross the language in your writings in multiple different languages.

If you wish to remain an anonymous author, your submissions can be published without your name or any other identifiers, just let us know.

There is no age limit in this contest.

All poems will be published in our July 2023 newsletter and our readers will be voting on their favorite poem/poems. Winners will be announced in our August newsletter. All contestants and readers will be available to vote on their favorite poem. The authors of the most liked poems will receive some sweet prices.

If you wish to participate, please submit your poems to
sokolsfevents@gmail.com no later than 05/31/2023.

Winners will be announced in our August 2023newsletter.

Did you know that Sokol SF donated the bust of Thomas Garrigue Masaryk to Golden Gate Park and it was unveiled on October 30, 1960!

T.G. Masaryk was born on March 7, 1850, and every year we visit Golden Gate Park to lay flowers at his bust and commemorate this important person in our Czechoslovak history.

The trail is suitable for all ages!
Come on your own to meet new friends, bring a friend with you, bring your kids ...
we are looking forward to seeing you all!
Dogs on leashes are welcome.
Let's go for a hike and reflect on our country's history!

Mark your calendars - we are planning a field trip to 84th Annual Moravian Days Festival
in Lemont, IL
September 23rd and 24th, 2023

Moravian Day festival focuses on the spirit, beauty, and talents of the Czech, Slovak, and Moravian regions. Come to Moravian Day to feel the heart and soul of people celebrating a festival in true ethnic style. Our goal is to preserve traditions and show our future generations the music, dancing, and culture of their ancestors. During this weekend festival, you can listen or sing along to beautiful songs of the heartland. Enjoy the energetic rhythms of polkas and such from our dancers of all ages. Have traditional food & bakery and imported Czech beer. You can also purchase arts & crafts from the Czech and Slovak Republics.

To get a good deal on our hotel rooms, airfare, etc we want to start planning now. Please click on the survey below so we can get an idea of how many people would be interested in going. At this point, it is non-committal.

The suggested plan for the trip is flying out Friday from SFO, spending 2 nights in a hotel, visiting the two-day festival and returning back to SFO on Sunday night. We have budgeted a stipend for Sokol SF members to attend this cultural event. The amount per person will be based on number of people attending.
I am interested in visiting Moravian Days Festival Sept. 23-24, 2023

Blomstedt Conducts Dvorak
Davies Symphony Hall
Pre-Concert Reception and Lecture and Symphony

Thirty-five Sokol members and guests gathered in the Green Room at Davies Symphony Hall to hear a pre-concert lecture by Czech composer and musicology professor, Lukas Janata. Lukas led the crowd on a musical introduction to a rarely performed symphony by Jan Vaclav Vorisek, introducing themes and providing historical context and the composer's biography. He then launched into musical scape of Antonin Dvorak's Eighth Symphony, complete with notes from his recent meeting with Maestro Herbert Blomstedt.

Lukas Janata would like to share his info and his impression of the concert with Sokol members:
"It was a delight to be invited and speak on topics dear to my soul and life focus. After the concert, I went to see Maestro and he was genuinely pleased that my talk spoke the right atmosphere and that I was touched by the performance, especially, of the second movement that I also mentioned in my presentation.

Please share my warm greetings with the Sokol community, and if they’re interested in my work, I keep my website updated: www.lukasjanata.cz

to the Czech Republic!

The photos should depict the beauty of Czechia, whether through its nature, architecture, culture, culinary delights, and/or modern marvels. From SVU Los Angeles:

Dear Members and Friends of SVU-LA,

The Board of SVU-LA would like to inform you of an uneasy situation regarding
Sokol Los Angeles and ask for your help. The President and members of the Executive Board of Sokol LA have decided to resign from their posts, leaving the existence of Sokol in LA in danger. We are searching for someone willing to lead this historically rich Czech organization, find new members and continue its legacy.
This situation must be resolved by March 31st.

Before anyone can accept a leadership position, they must first become a member of the Unit Once a member, their qualifications will be reviewed and presented to the membership for a vote. Sokol is operated by volunteers without pay (as is SVU) and reports to the American Sokol Organization in Illinois.

We hope this email will reach many proud Czech natives who will be willing to embrace their roots and reclaim the tradition of Sokol in Los Angeles. If you are interested, please contact SVU-LA or Sokol LA directly. A membership application can be found at this link.

Sincerely,

President Lída Sandera
Directors Brona Fanelle, Aneta Campbell and Tereza Bellodi
