Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
“The leaders of Newman Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Rumford, decided “a more proactive approach was necessary,” said their pastor, the Rev. Timoth Silvia. Part of that approach is its new Community Racial Equity Scholarship for Black, Indigenous and other people of color. The church gave its first $4,000 award to a local student Aug. 4 and is raising funds to expand the program.”
“Historically, American institutions, including religious institutions, have contributed to the unequal treatment of many of its marginalized citizens, particularly those identified as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC),” Newman’s announcement said. “Unjust policies involving housing, politics, hiring and education opportunities are depressing examples that continue to hinder this large segment of our society.”

From the Environmental Justice Team
|
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change told the world the climate is dangerously close to a tipping point that would lead to climate chaos and that human activities - primarily burning fossil fuels and deforestation - are to blame.
So how should we as individuals respond to this "code red for humanity?" Here are some ideas:
-
Feel the grief and fear - Allowing yourself to feel, grieve and contemplate everything we're going through is important.
-
Remember our actions matter - Realizing our actions at home and collectively can really make a difference, can feel empowering and inspire others to join.
-
Talk to friends and family, find support and be supportive - Have (sometimes difficult) climate conversations. Talk about your vision for a just and sustainable future. You are not alone. Support one another. Find and cultivate a support network.
-
Find hope and inspiration - It abounds if you look for it. There are so many inspiring stories of people who are leading the transition to renewable energy in their communities and reasons to be hopeful. pe is a key ingredient these days.
-
Demand bold and ambitious climate action - We need to get Congress to act on climate change with the ambition and urgency this crisis demands. Action is an important antidote to despair. Email and call your congressman to support carbon pricing: cclusa.org/house.
-
Plant a tree or donate to an organization that plants trees, preferably trees native to our region - This is one of our church's projects. Trees produce oxygen, sequester carbon, and provide so many other benefits!
-
Join RUCC's Environmental Justice Team! Join with a group of friends who share your concern about the climate crisis and the environment and who want to make a difference. We need your energy, ideas, and passion. Please don't make me beg!
