About The Chevalier:
Recently described as “Hamilton meets the Symphony,” The Chevalier tells the story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, an 18th century Black composer. The archetypal Renaissance man Bologne was a gentleman of the nobility, champion fencer, general of Europe’s first Black military regiment, a crusader against slavery, virtuoso violinist, and one of the most celebrated musicians in France. Writer and director Bill Barclay’s play portrays Bologne in a deservedly heroic light: as a friend to the young Mozart, as an enlightening mentor to Marie Antoinette, and above all, as a true patriot of equality – an ideal that shines through the fabric of his music. The production, which is part play and part concert, uses Bologne’s story and the setting of the French Revolution to shed light on the fights for social justice today.
