The CAVC Board of Directors advances our mission across Ventura County as a collective of like-minded individuals across private and public sectors who are committed to strengthening pathways out of poverty in all of our communities.
In our Board Member Spotlight series, we ask Board members about who they are and why they support CAVC. Our Spotlight for August introduces you to Kate Mills.
Sector on Board of Directors Representing: Low Income
Occupation: Program Administrator (retired)
Member of the Board since: December 2017
CAVC: Why did you join the CAVC Board of Directors?
KM: Throughout my career I have observed the results of lack of adequate housing, lack of employment and adequate income, lack of adequate education and lack of access to adequate healthcare. Joining the CAVC Board of Directors has allowed me to support CAVC’s three approaches to addressing these “lacks” through advocacy, partnerships, and services.
CAVC: What inspires you most about CAVC?
KM: There are many agencies which do good by assisting community members with their immediate needs. CAVC recognizes the difference between “providing for” and “working with”. I am inspired by the programs and services and the staff who provide them, while honoring and promoting the dignity and self-sufficiency of the individual and, exponentially, the community.
CAVC: What is one program or service CAVC offers that is particularly meaningful to you, and why?
KM: All CAVC programs and services are important in helping to address the immediate needs of our county community: helping with past-due rent or utilities; improving energy efficiency of homes and appliances; providing showers and clean clothes; addressing food shortages with fresh produce and products.
I am proud of all these programs, but the most meaningful to me is our food distribution program. CAVC not only addresses the lack of food through our food pantry, but goes the additional mile by delivering food through our partnership with DoorDash to those who cannot access our food pantry. Our program then partners with other organizations to serve as a food distribution hub, providing a central location for produce acquisition and distribution into additional community locations. Lastly, this program addresses environmental issues by working with community businesses to rescue over 100,000 pounds of food monthly, preventing it from going to waste and having it adversely affect our air quality.
CAVC: Describe a day in your life:
KM: I never believed that one’s life could become busier in retirement; I was wrong. I have no typical day. I attend classes in wellness of mind, body, and spirit; social justice; senior outreach; and peer support. I visit with my children and grandchildren, read, listen to music and am developing a pretty good list of edible meals. My husband is a deacon in our faith community and I assist community activities through our faith community.
CAVC: What is one goal you've had for yourself in 2022?
KM: My goal is to keep life simple.
