AND NOW, A WORD FROM OUR INTERN
Ellen Paul & Elena Schnerr
This month we’re switching things up and I’m handing over the director’s corner of the newsletter to our intern, Elena Schnerr.
Elena is an MLIS student at SCSU. When I approached Southern last fall about hosting an intern, I gave them the caveat that this wouldn’t be a normal library internship. We needed someone who was willing to try something new, someone who wanted to learn about bids and contracts, someone who wanted to learn about being a librarian’s librarian.
I’m so happy to say that we got everything we asked for and more. Elena has been with us since January, and this week we are sad to have to say goodbye to her. But before she goes, we asked her to write a little bit about her experience here. So here it is, an unfiltered look at what’s it’s like to intern at CLC for twelve weeks!

When I started the MLIS program at Southern Connecticut State University in Fall 2021, I was already nervous thinking about where I might end up. But when the opportunity to intern at CLC was presented to me, I was immediately drawn to it. It was a chance for a unique internship outside of standard library work. After interviewing with Ellen, Amanda, and Jackie, I knew that I would love to intern there and was grateful to be chosen for the position. I was looking forward to seeing the other side of library work and expanding my knowledge outside of what I could learn from my course textbooks.
I have been continuously amazed at all the work CLC does and what I have been able to be a part of during my time here. I was able to experience the bid process, attend an entertainment/vendor showcase, and learn firsthand about legislation and advocacy for libraries. This experience has been insightful to the work behind the scenes for libraries, as well as inspiring me in new ways that I did not expect.
I am leaving CLC with knowledge I don’t believe I would have found elsewhere, but also with a new passion for this profession. CLC has motivated me to want to be an involved librarian and be a better advocate for libraries. As my internship has come to an end, I have to say that it has been one of the most beneficial and educational experiences of my life. Not only did I meet some of the nicest people here, I have also learned far more about library work, and about myself, through this experience.

I am genuinely so thankful for the mentorship I received during my time here. I look forward to hopefully working with CLC and with many of you in the future!

Q: What do prize wheels, giant buttons, LEGO minifigs, and airbrushed tattoos have in common?
A: They’ve each been spotted at our fun booths at the Connecticut Library Association conference!
The CLA conference is a highlight of our year – an opportunity to chat with our colleagues, visit with vendors, learn at the wonderful programs, AND provide some fun entertainment at our booth. And this year is no different!
We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but we’ll be taking many of you on a trip down memory lane. And helping those of you who may be new to LibraryLand see the value your library gets from CLC in a new way.
Be sure to find us in the Exhibit Hall!

And if you’re there on Tuesday, come to our Working with Consultants: What They Didn’t Teach You in Library School panel program to learn how to choose the right consultant for you AND hear about our brand-new Consultant Directory. More on that below!

COMING SOON ... MORE SUPPLIES SUPPLIERS
Jacqueline Cashin
Hello! In January, CLC re-opened our supplies bid in order to add new categories to our market basket. The bids are in, and thirteen suppliers have thrown their hats into the ring. Among them are suppliers providing plastic cards, custodial and janitorial supplies, toys and games, art supplies and office supplies. We are currently in the evaluation stage of the bidding process, but we will have an announcement for you soon about who gets awarded. The contracts will be ready just in time for the new fiscal year on July 1, 2023.
As you plan your projects for the next fiscal year, we have several new library equipment suppliers on contract as well. So if you are planning any updates or new purchases in your library, don’t forget to get your discount.
As always, if you have any questions about your discounts or any supplier, don’t hesitate to contact us and we can help. I hope you have a wonderful spring season!

HOW CAN WE HELP?
By helping you find the right help for you!
Looking for a space planner? Interior designer? Help with your strategic plan?
Keep your eyes peeled for the launch of our new Consultant Directory.
We’re creating this tool based on our successful Program Directory, and have invited consultants in seven different categories to create profiles:
Buildings & Facilities | Diversity, Equity & Inclusion | Fundraising | HR & Legal Services | Marketing & Branding | Staff Training | Strategic Planning
The feature we’re most excited about? A full set of information provided by each consultant to get an idea of what it’s like to work with them. We’ve asked them to share what solutions clients come to them for, their experience working with libraries, their fees, their work and communication styles, and references.
We’re working on populating the Consultant Directory as you’re reading this, and hope to release a version for you to use at the end of the month! Please contact Amanda with your questions and recommendations - astern@ctlibrarians.org, 860.740.3044.
