transit-oriented development

noun

tran·sit ori·ent·ed de·vel·op·ment

transit-oriented development (TOD) is the planning and construction of communities that create compact, mixed-use neighborhoods in close proximity to high-quality transit where people can drive less but enjoy easy access to housing, jobs, amenities, services and all of life’s essentials.

TOD Explained

Take a look at transit-oriented developments (TODs) from Portland, Oregon to Arlington, Virginia to learn why they may be one of the best ways to expand housing supply while curbing traffic and GHG emissions.

The Forum

The primary goal of Next Stop: Transit-Oriented Development is to broaden awareness and understanding of TOD as a strategy for creating attractive, vibrant neighborhoods with abundant new housing choices close to jobs, services and all of life's essentials. The forum will also highlight TOD's role in reducing barriers to racial justice, reducing climate emissions and saving families thousands on transportation costs, the 2nd highest household expense after housing.

Along with all this will be an examination of the vital and necessary tools, policies and incentives that support efficient TOD.

Dan-Rivera image

The keynote speaker is Dan Rivera, CEO of MassDevelopment, Massachusetts' leading economic development agency. Rivera will provide a Massachusetts perspective on the role and impact of several tools, incentives and policies that support TOD in Massachusetts.

As the former Mayor of Lawrence, MA (2014-2021), he's credited with improving transit in that city and helping to create more than 2,400 new units of housing, many of which are located near transit stations and along key transit routes.

Approximately 200 attendees are expected, including state leaders, municipal officials and planners, developers and builders, realtors, architects, engineers, housing, transit and environmental advocates and non-profit leaders, among others.
