ASSETS

Every one of us has something of value to share with someone else.

REDEFINING WORK

There are some forms of work that money will not easily pay for, like building strong families, revitalizing neighborhoods, making democracy work, advancing social justice. Time credits are designed to reward, recognize and honor that work.

RECIPROCITY

“How can I help you?” needs to change so we ask: “Will you help someone too?” Paying it forward ensures that, together, we help each other build the world we all will live in.

COMMUNITY/SOCIAL NETWORKS

Helping each other, we reweave communities of support, strength & trust. Community is built by sinking roots, building trust, creating networks.

RESPECT

The heart and soul of democracy lies in respect for others. We strive to respect where people are in the moment, not where we hope they will be at some future point.

Edgar Cahn

Edgar Cahn created timebanking (which he first called service credits and then time dollars) as a medium of exchange in 1980. From day one, he has been utterly committed to the vision of timebanking as a pathway to recognizing, honoring, and rewarding the seemingly mundane work that people do every day to help and inspire one another and to mutually support each other and their community's well-being. He celebrated those who “got it” and worked closely with the hardy pioneers who first picked it up.

Christine Gray

Joining TimeBanks.org in 1999 as a volunteer, then as Associate for Special Projects, Christine became CEO of TimeBanks USA in 2009-2011 and joined the Board in 2012. Dedicated to spreading TimeBanking, she continues to take on multiple roles, including training, writing articles, making presentations, and partnering with community organizers at the grassroots level.

Christine secured her doctoral degree in political science at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2011. Her doctoral thesis was published as The Tribal Moment in American Politics: The Struggle for Native American Sovereignty in June 2013 by the Alta Mira Press.
