The following memo was issued to the Charlotte Campus Community.
As of January 5, 2022, North Carolina’s positivity rate has risen to 31.8%. As we continue to monitor the increasing number of COVID cases in Charlotte, we have revisited the plans for the spring semester remote start to continue to ensure the best protocols for the health and safety of our campus community. Please review this important update regarding the revised return protocols and schedule.

All in-person academic classes will begin remotely on January 10 and remain remote until January 20; in-person instruction will resume on January 24. As we have had good success with low positivity within lab classes, all courses with a lab component (including CFIT labs and applied food science labs) will still start on January 18. Science courses with a lab component will begin remotely on January 10 and in-person on January 18. These decisions were made with the aim of reducing the density on campus and the demand for resources related to positive cases. The college chairs will soon be providing specific details relating to your class schedule.

All unvaccinated students, faculty, and staff will be required to participate in weekly testing until Spring Break (we will re-evaluate at that time). CFIT faculty may also participate in testing January 10, 19 and 26. Please be sure you have signed up for the first week of testing on January 10; additional testing links will be sent later.

Residential students in lab classes should still plan to return to campus on January 9 and participate in on-campus testing on January 10. If you are participating in university-approved internships or cannot adjust your travel plans, please email [email protected] to notify us of your arrival this weekend. Students returning to campus this weekend are encouraged to get a COVID test completed before arrival and upload those results to the Medicat Portal, but will still be expected to test on-campus on January 10. Additional details will be provided by Residential Life as we prepare for your return.

Residential students enrolled in academic courses only who were planning to return this weekend are encouraged to stay home. Your new move-in date is Saturday, January 22 or Sunday, January 23. If you have currently registered for testing on January 10 and will no longer be arriving, please email Michelle Page, administrative assistant in student affairs, to cancel your appointment. You should plan to get a negative COVID test before your arrival, and will be expected to participate in COVID testing on-campus on January 26.

New students enrolled in academic classes only are advised to stay home and to participate in the virtual new student orientation program on January 7 remotely.

Additional information will be shared on testing and screening requirements as we prepare for in-person return for academic classes on January 24.
If you have questions related to this revised plan, please contact Amber Perrell, Ed.D., dean of students.
