UPDATE FROM AUGUSTA/OPTOMETRY BILL

  • The drafted bill to modernize the Scope of Optometry for Maine is in the revisor’s office now- where they will prepare the bill in proper technical form.
  • When ready, the bill will be given to our Sponsor (Senator Stacy Brenner) we will then have 5 days for changes, and to collect co-sponsors (we have a number of legislators in support ready to co-sponsor)
  • The bill is then printed, given a legislative document (LD) number and referred to a committee (HCIFS)
  • The bill is then scheduled for a public hearing (typically two weekends in advance of hearing- it could be sped up due to time restraints)

HOW SUPPORT THE EFFORTS NOW

  1. Reach out to your Local legislators- tell them we have a bill in the works-we want there support for
  2. MARCH is town Meeting time- does your town have a meeting coming up? Attend and seek out your legislator there!
  3. Most Legislators schedule meetings with constituents on Saturdays during session- make a point to meet.
  4. HELP out at OPTOMETRY AT THE CAPITOL! We have Tuesdays, some Wed/Thurs now that we are meeting legislators in the halls of the Capitol building-quick meet and greets to talk about our bill. WE NEED HELP TO FILL THOSE DAYS- if you have a day off please let CAROLINE KNOW.

YOUR Patient experiences and your referral information!

Patient examples needed

Expanded optometric scope of practice helps patients – so we need to let legislators know how patients would benefit from this legislation. Examples don’t need to be lengthy and can be generic or include the patient’s name, with their written permission. Stories may be shared on MOA's social media channels, in legislative testimony and/or in other public messaging.

Below is an example to get the wheels turning.

Bangor small business owner Steve Smith supports expanding optometric scope of practice. “My time is worth money. I can’t afford to take time off for extra appointments. If optometrists in other states can perform these procedures, why can’t mine?”

Send anecdotes to Caroline Fontaine, MOA Executive Director,  moa@maineeyedoctors.org.

OR provide the patient name and email or phone # and we will call them!
