Reno small businesses are some of the highest-paying in the country for medium-size metros while Texas cities paid the lowest, a study found.

An analysis of U.S. Census data found that small businesses in the greater Reno-Sparks metro area are among the top in the country when it comes to paying employees a higher wage.

The Reno metro area’s average wage of $54,230 was sixth-highest in the nation for medium-size cities, according to the analysis by online small business lender OnDeck, which was completed in June.

A medium-size metro area has a population between 500,000 and 1 million people.

The Census Bureau defines small businesses as those with 500 employees or less.

Here is a list of the top 10 medium-size metros where small businesses pay the highest wages in the United States, based on U.S. Census data:

  1. Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina: $58,254
  2. Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, California: $56,831
  3. Huntsville, Alabama: $56,121
  4. Albany-Schenectady-Troy, New York: $55,045
  5. Des Moines-West Des Moines, Iowa: $54,617
  6. Reno, Nevada: $54,230
  7. Madison, Wisconsin: $54,186
  8. Portland-South Portland, Maine: $52,985
  9. Modesto, California: $52,429
  10. Stockton-Lodi, California: $51,578

“Nevada's $12 (per) hour minimum wage is already above the federal minimum wage,” an OnDeck spokesperson said.

“However, many small businesses in the Reno metro area are offering much higher wages to attract skilled talent and meet staffing needs.”

Reno’s average wage, for example, is higher than the Nevada average salary of $50,499 from the state’s small businesses.

Texas dominated the list when it came to the lowest-paying medium-size cities in the country, accounting for the bottom three spots in the ranking.

The state also had the two lowest-paying metro areas for smaller cities, with the Eagle Pass metro area at the bottom of the list for its average wage of $28,721.
