Happy May! As nature begins its spring renewal and reopening, we have some reopening news to share too.

Over the last year while navigating stay at home orders and public health guidelines, our primary goal and message has been: WE CAN IS OPEN and HERE TO HELP. We were able to offer services without interruption because of new use of technology and the flexibility of our staff and volunteers. Now we are excited to share that we have reopened our office, initially to staff and key volunteers, with safety protocols in place. Further reopening will happen in phases and we promise to keep you updated.

Our team also wants to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to the WE CAN community. We hope that you have an opportunity to celebrate your mother - whether in-person, remote, or in memory - in a way that feels special. And to all of the Moms out there: we see you, we see all you are doing, and we hope you have a terrific Mother's Day!

Volunteer Spotlight: Our Reception Support Team

What happens when someone calls WE CAN? The first time someone calls our office seeking help, they often feel nervous or overwhelmed. Sometimes they are afraid to explain their circumstances. Frequently they are on the verge of tears. It takes bravery to pick up the phone and reach out for help and our goal is to ensure they feel heard, supported and relieved at the end of the call.

It starts by having an experienced, skilled, kind and empathetic team of volunteers on the other end of the phone. If you call WE CAN, you will be greeted by Karen, Margot, Myra, Connie, or Cynthia– our caring team of Reception Support Volunteers. They work alongside our staff and strive to leave every caller feeling and knowing they made the right decision to call WE CAN and are now on a path that will lead to a better place.

And these amazing volunteers go the extra mile! Karen Young once talked to a very frightened caller for over an hour until she felt comfortable and safe. This caller started out afraid to even give her name and was ultimately able to trust and accept help through WE CAN legal and financial services. Karen understood that the woman needed time to in order to be able to trust again, because of the trauma of her past experiences.

Join WE CAN's 20th Anniversary Gasp Ride Team!

We are excited to participate in The Gasp bike ride fundraising event again this year - and what a special year it will be! Join us to be part of the WE CAN 20th Anniversary Team for the ride this year!

The Gasp will be virtual again this year and you can "do it your way" but also be part of a great team of riders. We will be hosting regular WE CAN training rides (with masks and appropriate safety precautions) for those interested in participating and will have fun, supportive, and celebratory ways to make this year extra special. Each rider gets to decide how to accomplish their Gasp Ride, and make it work for them. For some this might mean the challenge of a long distance ride; others might prefer to break the ride up into several more manageable days. Whatever you decide - it's your GASP!

Ride Week Dates: September 5th-10th

Rider Entry Fee: $25

Fundraising Minimum: $250
