Bridges Rock Gym Reopening Update | June 26th, 2020
Reopening Update

Today the Contra Costa County Department of Public Health released a statement on their COVID-19 Reopening Timeline . While not much is clear yet, we think this could mean a delayed reopening date, or it could mean we reopen with further restrictions such as a reduced capacity.

Whether or not we'll be able to re-open on July 1st, we are finalizing our preparations for reopening and wanted to keep you in the loop.

For those of you who have continued to pay your membership dues during the shutdown, we can't say thank you enough. Because of you, we've been able to pay our rent + utilities, pay our essential staff, offer virtual classes, and keep Team Bridges running. We will be forever grateful, and are still trying to figure out how to say thank you.

For those of you whose memberships are currently frozen, you can unfreeze your membership at any time at . While all Freezes start on the 1st, you can unfreeze at anytime – today, the day we open, or July 25th - it's all groovy.

If you are currently paying a reduced membership dues amount and would like to return to the gym, you are essentially a frozen member – please submit a member change request at to unfreeze your membership when you're ready.

If you've lost your job because of the pandemic but would like to remain a part of our community, we want to work with you. Please shoot us an email at and we'll do our best to take care of you.
Gym Sessions

Initially, all gym sessions will be  by reservation only, and we will only serve current Monthly Autopay, Prepaid, and Team Bridges members ages 14+. We will not be accepting drop-ins.
In order to ensure that everyone has a fair shot at using the gym:
  • Sessions will be available up to 72 hours in advance
  • Limit of one session per member per day. You'll have to choose between Bouldering, Weights, Cardio, and Classes for now.
  • We need 24 hours notice to cancel your reservation, and will charge a $10 cancellation fee if you fail to show up for your session. Cancellations can be made by emailing or by calling us at 510-525-5635.
  • Obviously, we want you to stay home if you are feeling sick at the last-minute, so please just give us a call and let us know.

We hope to be able to relax these restrictions, and to serve our younger members and day use customers soon. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

You'll be able to reserve a Bouldering Session, Cardio Session, or Weight Room Session at .
Yoga + Fitness Classes

We are excited that we'll be able to offer a selection of Yoga + Fitness classes in person, with a class cap of 6 students per class. Since we won't have room for everybody initially, and we realize that some of our members may not be comfortable taking class in person yet, we'll continue to offer a host of Live Stream classes as well.

When the time comes, you'll be able to book Yoga + Fitness classes on Monday at .

We have a couple of pretty major surprises in store for you, and we can't wait to share.

First off, we've re-set the entire gym with brand new boulder problems. We've split the bouldering floor into distinct climbing areas, so it's easy to keep your distance. We focused on providing a variety of high-quality boulder problems in each style, and we think there's something for everyone. There's even a Dyno wall. Yup, get ready to jump!

We've replaced the V-Grade System with our own Circuit Grading System. Instead of each problem being assigned a grade sucvh as V4, V5, or V6, it will be assigned a range such as V3-V5, V4-V6, or V5-V7. There are many reasons that Bouldering gyms across the country are adopting Circuit Grading Systems, but we'd like to talk about just a few here.

You may have noticed already, but we think that V-Grades are pretty subjective. For Head Routesetter Jessie, a srcunchy, crimpy V7 feels like V4-5. For General Manager Kenneth, a V8 dyno to pinches feels about V5-V6. Height, weight, age, gender, body type, strength, and experience all play into how hard a problem feels, and this subjectivity often leads to disappointment, unmet expectations, dashed hopes and dreams, and generally bad feels.

It's far too often that we let ourselves as climbers get boxed in by grades. How many times have you said to yourself, "oh I can't climb V6, I'm not one of the Team kids," or even "I should be able this V3 if I can climb that V3?" These barriers are often no more than mental blocks we've put up ourselves, and the best solution we've found is to challenge yourself with something a little outside your comfort zone.

We think our new Circuit Grading System is a little more honest, a little less subjective, and a little more accessible. We also know it's going to help us offer a better spread of boulder problems and climbing styles that are accessible to different ability levels. You'll not only have more fun climbing with us, but we think you might even progress faster. We can't wait for you to try it.

Finally, we'd be remiss if we forgot to mention that we built something. Something big.

But you'll have to wait until we open to see it.
