Rep. Hernandez Vice-Chair of Cities and Villages Committee!
AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is highlighting her commitment to prioritizing COVID-19 relief, economic recovery, and environmental advocacy as Vice-Chair of the House Cities and Villages Committee and member of the House Appropriations – Higher Education, Energy and Environment, Housing and International Trade and Commerce Committees.

“Over the past year, cities and villages have faced massive challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Hernandez. “As we enter a new session, I look forward to my new role as vice-chair of the House Cities and Villages Committee to continue collaboration with local governments to ensure that they are getting the support they need while also supporting and providing relief for taxpayers.”

During the legislative process, each bill is assigned to a relevant committee, making committees one of the first steps in the lawmaking process. Hernandez intends to prioritize economic recovery for local governments, ensure critically needed
support for institutions of higher education, provide support for municipalities struggling to adapt to changes brought on by the pandemic and implement policies that promote renewable energy, and help address the effects of climate change.

“We have a long road ahead of us to provide the much-needed relief our communities need from the pandemic, as well as continuing our work to build a stronger Illinois,” said Hernandez. “I am eager and excited for the work that lies ahead and committed to working to implement important legislation that addresses the most pressing issues facing our state.”

My Legislation Updates
HB156- Menstrual Hygiene Products in Schools Bathrooms
HB0156 would require school districts to make menstrual hygiene products available to students, at no cost, in each bathroom of every school building. My hope is that making menstrual hygiene products more available and accessible to students during their school day will help to ease the burden of period poverty, which is the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products due to funds.

Please consider supporting this essential legislation by:
  • Calling your State Representatives to cosponsor HB0156 (bit.ly/findmystaterep). Don’t worry about what to say, you can keep it simple, for example:
“Hi, my name is _______ and I am calling to let you know that as your constituent, I support HB0156 and would like you to co-sponsor this bill as my representative.”

  • Share this flyer with your peers and local organizations or groups who might be interested in helping to make menstrual hygiene products available to students for free in every school building.
  • Using the Google form below, share your story of a time that you, a friend, or family member would have benefitted from menstrual hygiene products being provided in school bathrooms for free throughout grades 6th to 12th.

You can also email [email protected] to tell your story or express any concerns that you may have.
HB155- Adds Menstrual Hygiene Products to SNAP
HB0155 would allow the purchase of menstrual hygiene products through public benefits. My hope is that this will help to ease the burden of period poverty for women throughout the state of Illinois, which is the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products due to funds.

Please consider supporting this critical piece of legislation by:
  • Calling your state representatives to cosponsor HB0155 (bit.ly/findmystaterep). Feel free to use this sample script:
  • “Hi, my name is __________ and I am calling to let you know that as your constituent, I support HB0155 and would like you to co-sponsor this bill as my representative”
  • Sharing the attached flyer with legislators, friends, family, and anyone who is interested in making menstrual hygiene products more accessible.
  • Telling us about how you have been impacted by the unavoidable costs of menstrual hygiene products.

If you or anyone you know would like to share your story, please fill out the Google form below or email [email protected]. Don’t worry about what to say; we just want to hear about how the cost of menstrual hygiene products has impacted you.
HB154- Tax-exempt breast pumps
Breast pumps are basic necessities for breastfeeding mothers, and taxing pumps limits access to breastfeeding by making the product more expensive. That is why I introduced HB 154 to fully exempt breast pumps and supplies from sales tax.

---
