Fall is officially in season and with it comes football, festivals and election season. Members of the General Assembly have also been hard at work on study committees as we all work to finalize our committee findings in our reports, due in December.

As September brings the Fall season, it also brings the anniversary of 9/11. I don't believe there is a single person who doesn't remember what they were doing when they heard of the terror that hit our nation that tragic day. Since then, the public safety policy landscape of our nation has changed tremendously, both on the federal and state level.  Please read my full update below to see how we have been working to keep you and your loved ones safe.

In close, I want to thank our law enforcement officers and first response teams. Our area suffered a huge loss in the Summer of 2016 with the untimely death of Eastman Police Officer, Tim Smith. Our officers risk their lives daily, so that we can safely live ours. Next time you see a law enforcement officer or a first response team member- make sure to thank them for their willingness to serve.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you. May God bless each and every one of you and may he continue to bless our great state.

Public Safety Overview

The primary purpose of our government, as stated within the first stanza of our nation's Constitution, is to guarantee the protection of our citizens. We work hard each year to stay abreast of the constantly changing threats.

Study Committee News

Study Committees have been hard at work hearing testimony across the state in regards to various issues. These committees will complete hearings and file a final report in December for our review. The committee reports will determine what legislation, if any, will be brought forward. Below I have listed committees of interests, where I have received the most questions.

The House Rural Development Study Committee continues to make its way across our state. Meetings will continue to focus on issues important to Georgia's rural areas.

The study committee will stream all meetings live. For more information regarding the House Rural Development Study Committee,

The Joint Commission Joint Study Commission on Low THC Medical Oil Access began their hearings in August.

Established by House Bill 65, the Joint Study Commission on Low THC Medical Oil Access will examine in-state access to medical cannabis and low THC oil, including the security and control of the process from acquisition and planting of seeds to final destruction of unused portions of the plant; quality control of the manufacturing process; and dispensing the final product. The commission will also explore and identify ways to ensure proper security safeguards and systems for evaluating the qualifications of potential licensees, as well as implement a plan to ensure that low THC oil is affordable and readily available statewide to properly registered patients and caregivers. Meetings are open to the public, as are the meeting documents.  Live stream and video archives are also available on the Georgia General Assembly website.

Remaining Meeting Schedule
  • Friday, October 5, 2018 in Athens. The topic will be other state initiatives and data analysis;
  • Tuesday, October 23, 2018 in Savannah. The topic will be medical analysis pros and cons;
  • Wednesday, November 14, 2018 in Perry. The topic will be Georgia growers and access.
