RN Blog: Robin's Repair Fair Success Story

Robin Moller and her Electric Eraser

What is better than recycling and also starts with an "R"? Repair! By choosing to repair our items rather than trashing them, we conserve valuable resources and reduce landfill waste.

Zero Waste Marin, in collaboration with Reuse Alliance, is making it easier for folks to repair all kinds of items by hosting Repair Fairs throughout Marin County. Recently, one of our Resilient Neighborhoods graduates, Robin Moller, attended a Repair Fair to fix her electric eraser. You can read about her experience at the Repair Fair on our blog using the link below.

There are two more Repair Fairs scheduled this year!

Zero Waste Marin

Refill 101. A step-by-step guide for using refill and bulk options.

Reduce and Reuse are two of the most important ways we can address waste, and visiting a refill store can help us do both!

If you’re interested in visiting a refill store or bulk section of a grocery store, but aren’t sure where to get started, read on for a simple “how to” on the Refill process:

1. Select Your Container: A good place to start is simply using the containers you already have - if you just finished a bottle of shampoo or laundry detergent, hang on to them for refill. An empty jar of pasta sauce or nut butter can be repurposed for the bulk food section.

2. Find a Store Near You: If you’re not sure where your closest refill store is, check out this list on the Zero Waste Marin website. Many grocery stores now have bulk food sections as well.

3. Weigh Your Container: Before filling your container at the store, weigh it to find out its "tare weight." Write this weight on a piece of tape or a sticker and attach it to the container. This will allow the cashier to subtract the container's weight from your total purchase. It's a good idea to check with your store first to understand their specific procedures.

4. Refill Your Container: Fill your container(s) with your desired products and take them to the cashier.

5. Enjoy reducing waste! You did it! Once you get the hang of it, refilling is an easy way to minimize waste.
