Every new year usually brings some sort of attempted change...
For some it may be resolutions. Others may try to change or break old habits. But for some this time of year may lead to "repentance" from a life style that was not working out for them... not last year or maybe for many years of their life.
Recently the Lord has been showing me that repentance requires more than a change of heart. It requires us to change what we believe. Change of heart deals with our emotions and feelings but a "change of mind" is when we actually change what we believe. We know scientifically that we will only do what we believe. So if we continue in a pattern of living its because we truly believe that it's the only course of action that will make me feel better or solve my problem.
Take Esau, Issac's son, for example and how he lost his birthright and blessing. The Bible says in
Hebrews 12:15-17:
"See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. See that no one is sexually immoral or is godless (not living for God) like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son(acted out of his fleshly desires). Afterwards, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing (repented or was sorry) he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears."
And here's my point... Our life experiences and trials develop in us a belief system that is the controlling motivator for all that we do. And because of bad experiences in our lives, many of us develop UnGodly Beliefs (UGB) that go against God's Word, His Character or His Nature. Until we change those UGB's to Godly Beliefs (true Repentance) then even though we may cry a lot, and be emotionally affected, we will ultimately not change our behavior.
Esau was controlled by his fleshly desires and even though he emotionally cried out and tried to change, he was rejected. Or to put it another way, he could not receive what was rightfully his. As Christians, because of what Jesus did on the cross for us, we have an inheritance that we can inherit "on earth as it is in Heaven" according to Jesus. But because of UnGodly Beliefs operating in our life, the "enemy" can rob us from receiving it.
