YOUR FIRST CHECK-IN IS COMING UP!

Captains, week 2 of Miles for Wellness Challenge 30 ends Sunday, October 6. This means your first check-in is soon. Please remind your team members to send their tracking sheets to you on Monday, October 7.

Once you have received your team's step counts, update your captain's spreadsheet and complete the bi-weekly reporting form. The deadline to complete the form is by close of business on Wednesday, October 9.

ATTENTION: HURRICANE HELENE

Our thoughts are with those dealing with the unprecedented tragedy following Hurricane Helene and we are grateful for all that state employees are doing to help.

Those interested in contributing to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund to help communities recover from Helene can donate here. To stay up to date on information published by the Governor's office and state agencies, find press releases here.

For those concerned about tracking steps during power outages, estimated step counts are always accepted using the conversion tool in the participant's spreadsheet. If you are unable to report your steps for this check-in deadline, you may retroactively report your steps at a later deadline.

REPORTING ACCURATE STEPS

Please be sure your team members are accurately reporting their steps. If you are using a smartwatch, pedometer or step-counting app while taking part in physical activities you should not use the conversion function in the participant's spreadsheet to report those steps; they're already accounted for in the number of steps your watch or pedometer reports. For more help on filling out the participant's spreadsheet, find directions here.

COMPLETING THE CHECK-IN FORM

Below are some helpful tips for completing the bi-weekly submission form:

  • If you cannot find your team name listed on the form, you can type it in.
  • The step total you need to report can be found on your captain's spreadsheet in the blue box in the top right corner.
  • Do not use commas or decimals in your step count.
  • Do not attach your participant sheets; you should transfer all information to your captain's sheet and upload it when completing the bi-weekly check-in form.

Share the information below with your team as you make your way through each zoo along the Challenge's trail.

NORTH CAROLINA ZOO

While Miles for Wellness may not physically take you to Asheboro, this video gives you a closer look at the world's largest natural habitat zoo.

A CLOSER LOOK - RED WOLF HABITAT

Prefer to exercise in the early hours of the morning or in the evening just before sunset? Maybe you're "crepuscular" just like red wolves who are more active at dawn and dusk.

We may be aiming for 10,000 steps or 5 miles of activity per day, but that's nothing for a red wolf! They travel up to 20 miles a day in search of food and run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.

DISNEY'S ANIMAL KINGDOM

Watch here for a virtual journey through Disney's Animal Kingdom, which is 580 acres and the world's largest theme park.

A CLOSER LOOK - THE RARE SUMATRAN TIGER

Have a tough time prioritizing daily movement because you'd rather sleep more? The Sumatran tiger sleeps 18-20 hours a day.

They also have partially webbed toes that make them excellent swimmers. Swimming at a moderate pace converts to 225 steps per minute for Challenge 30, so get inspired by the Sumatran tiger and get your daily activity at the pool.

BI-WEEKLY REPORTING FORM

Submit your team's steps for each check-in and the final deadline using the bi-weekly reporting form.

Those deadlines are:

  • Weeks 1-2 due Wednesday, October 9
  • Weeks 1-4 due Wednesday, October 23
  • Weeks 1-6 due Wednesday, November 6
  • Weeks 1-8 (Final Submission) due Wednesday, November 20
