Report highlights our community of care
We've just issued our 2022 Corporate Citizenship Report: Community of Care. In it, we share how Point32Health, the parent company of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan and its affiliates, integrates good corporate citizenship in everything we do.
We know being a good corporate citizen means being relevant to communities, being centered in what matters to our region and learning from those closest to the issues. This report includes examples of products and services that are accessible, affordable and meet the needs of the people we serve; highlights business practices that promote environmental sustainability and prioritize people and their wellbeing; demonstrates how we engage and act in ways that are meaningful to our communities and our colleagues; and reinforces our value of a community of care.

Strategic communications planning resources for nonprofit organizations
Our friends at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation recently launched a Strategic Communication Planning Hub. This innovative online resource helps nonprofit organizations deliver the right messages at the right time using the right channels.
The hub is designed to eliminate challenges facing many nonprofit organizations and provide the tools necessary to do impactful work.
With this tool, users can create communication strategies tailored to their organizations’ needs and engage in a wide range of online learning, including content writing, digital strategies and tactics, message development and more.

AARP challenge grants include four local organizations | |

AARP announced the winners of its 2023 Community Challenge. Grants totaling more than $3.6 million will support 310 projects across the country and will support rural and urban communities to be great places to grow up and grow older.
Four local organizations receiving funding from the Foundation are on the AARP list.
Gather (Portsmouth, N.H.)
- To create a community garden with raised garden beds and vertical gardens to enable older residents of local senior housing communities to grow their own food.
Gibson Center For Senior Services (North Conway, N.H.)
- Funded with Mt. Washington Valley Age-Friendly Community; to support the Safe and Smart Home Expo, which will include a Smart Home on Wheels demonstrating technology to enable older people to age in place safely and in comfort.
La Colaborativa, Inc. (Chelsea, Mass.)
- To develop La Plazita, an indoor/outdoor space where Latinx residents age 50+ can gather, connect, celebrate and create community. The space is inspired by plazas, mercados and outdoor spaces in Latin America.
WalkMassachusetts (Springfield, Mass.)
- To implement a walk audit training program to teach residents how to recognize hazardous conditions and advocate for changes to make streets safer.

R.I. Food Policy Council named state lead in New England Report | |
|
The New England State Food System Planners Partnership released a report last month noting the overreliance on food exports by New England and called for a more regionalized approach to food production and consumption.
The report explores what it would take to supply 30 percent of the region’s food by 2030. Several state leads were named, including the Rhode Island Food Policy Council, a Foundation grantee, and five other state-level organizations. Maine legislature expands funding for Medicare, Meals on Wheels, and other critical programs for older adults | |

The Maine Council on Aging shared legislative victories for several vital programs in the budget passed earlier this month.
The budget, expected to be signed by Governor Mills, includes several wins for older adults in Maine:
- Expanded eligibility for the Medicare Savings Program, eliminating the asset test to qualify, and increasing eligibility to the program from 185% to 250% of the federal poverty line. This ensures that at least 30,000 older Mainers can meet their basic needs when they enroll in this program.
- $5.5 million to fund Meals on Wheels and $1 million for Maine’s Area Agencies on Aging to enhance Maine’s Aging and Disability Resource Centers.
- Funding to staff Legal Services for the Elderly, support the Elder Victims Restitution Fund and expand eligibility for the State Property Tax Deferral Program available to people over the age of 65.

On-demand van changing the future of transportation in Newport, R.I. | |
Age Friendly Rhode Island has partnered with Looking Upwards to provide on-demand transportation services for older adults and people living with disabilities in Newport, R.I.
In its first month, the van gave more than 250 free rides to people living below the poverty line. Learn more about the project and watch the inspiring stories of its impact here.
| Senior Agenda Coalition of R.I. names Cindy Coyne as Executive Director | |
The Senior Agenda Coalition of Rhode Island has hired Cindy Coyne as its new executive director.
An independent and diverse coalition of agencies and individuals, the Senior Agenda Coalition uses community organizing, public education and advocacy to "mobilize people to achieve power in order to implement an agenda that improves the quality of life of older Rhode Islanders." The Foundation has supported the coalition's work.
Cindy joined the Senior Agenda Coalition Board of Directors in 2023. A graduate of URI, Cindy holds a B.S. in Administration of Justice from Roger Williams University. From 1985 to 2006 she served as a Rhode Island State Trooper, rising to the rank of Lieutenant.
| New senior communications specialist joins Foundation team | |
We are pleased to welcome Allie Richards as the Foundation’s new senior communications specialist.
Allie has experience as a community advocate and communications professional. She joins us from Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), an anti-poverty community action agency in Greater Boston. As the senior grant writer at ABCD, she raised essential funding for a diverse portfolio of programs from housing to workforce development.
Allie is passionate about providing resources to communities in need. She graduated from Clark University with a bachelor's degree in International Development and Social Change and a master’s degree in Community Development and Planning.
A native of Maine, Allie now lives in Boston.

Amplify LatinX recognizes Nora Moreno Cargie
Nora Moreno Cargie, the president of Point32Health Foundation and vice president for corporate citizenship at Point32Health, is being recognized for her "commitment to excellence, unwavering passion, and remarkable accomplishments [that] have not only inspired those around her but have also left an indelible impact on society."
"Nora represents the very best of our people,” said Eneida Román, president and CEO of Amplify LatinX. “She is a seasoned leader who cares deeply about the wellbeing of her community and that is represented in her work in and out of the office. We are honored to celebrate her contributions and immense value to civil society."
ALX100 honorees will be featured in a mobile exhibition that will travel around Massachusetts in the fall.

Boston Business Journal announces top charitable contributors
Point32Health has been recognized as a top charitable contributor for the Boston Business Journal's 2023 Corporate Citizenship Awards.
Companies working across the state in financial and professional services; health care, technology and retail as well as professional sports organizations are included on the list. The BBJ will announce the final rankings at an event in early September.
