For as long as anyone can remember, the Montgomery County Republican Party (MCRP) Headquarters has been located at 310 Metcalf Street in downtown Conroe. Dr. Wally Wilkerson, longtime chairman of the party, spent a lifetime within the walls of the Headquarters, collecting mementos of past campaigns and Republican Party history. It was a second home to party members who would congregate to hold meetings and look at years of memories covering the walls.
That all changed on April 2, 2023, when Chairman Bryan Christ abruptly removed the contents of the Headquarters building and shut it down forever.
Chairman Christ announced, without prior notice to the conservative majority Executive Committee, that the landlord had suddenly ended our month-to-month lease. We also were notified that the contents of Headquarters had been returned to the original donors, donated, or placed in storage.
Some of the items were even donated to the Waller County Republican Party rather than being turned over to the CEC majority of our own Montgomery County Republican Party. Every duly elected and appointed Precinct Chair should have been given advance notice and allowed to vote on this decision.
The County Executive Committee (CEC) majority did all we could to save the Headquarters. MCRP Treasurer Charles Shirley had paid the rent through April 30, but the landlord refused to negotiate with him because Chairman Christ’s name was on the lease as the CEC's representative. For more information on this situation, please read the documents below. The first is written by longtime Precinct Chair, Betty Anderson. The second is a response from the Party that provides documentation and some details missing from Chairman Christ's emails about his closure of Headquarters.
