A Note from North Shore Fire/Rescue:
|
|
North Shore Fire/Rescue is in the process of updating our Strategic Plan for 2020-2023. Our organization exists to protect and serve the City of Glendale and the Villages of Bayside, Brown Deer, Fox Point, River Hills, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. It is important to us to make sure our organization is meeting the needs of the communities we serve. One way to do this is to use community feedback as part of our planning process. While we enjoy on-going, regular feedback from the communities we serve, this survey is a direct method to ensure that your feedback is part of our planning process.

Your Lawn — What’s Next? Tips from the Whitefish Bay Garden Club:
Every week we will delve into each step below in greater detail, but here is the overview of the next four steps to prepare your grass for a blockbuster spring:
- Core aerate — let your soil and your grass roots breathe.
- Outcompete the weeds next year, by planting more grass this year — overseed or completely re-seed in patches where there is no turf grass left.
- Top dress with compost.
- Water — lightly, but frequently. You don’t want new grass seedlings to get waterlogged or dry out.
Let’s dig deeper (pardon the pun) into the first step — core aeration. Why is it so important? Aeration creates pathways in the soil for oxygen and moisture. To core aerate, you have options:
- Rent a machine and split the rental costs with neighbors (generally around $75 for a four-hour minimum or $100/day). Rent a machine that actually pulls plugs or cores of soil instead of a machine that pushes spikes into the soil. Be sure to water your grass a day BEFORE.
- Do it yourself with a garden fork. This is generally the easiest and the least expensive way if you only have small compacted patches. Water a day ahead, then push the fork deeply into the soil with your foot, wiggle back and forth to create space. The holes should be about 3-4” apart.
- Hire a professional firm. Core aeration will generally be offered along with the other three steps recommended above.
The core aeration step is important because if your soils aren’t able to hold both oxygen and moisture, no amount of grass seed, fertilizer, or soil amendments will help bring your lawn back to life.
How frequently should you core aerate? Every other year is a good preventative measure for most lawns, but if your grass gets a fair amount of foot traffic from pets or children, core aerate annually. If the ground feels soft underfoot, this step can be skipped this year except in the compacted areas. Learn more at

Did you know?September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which includes National Suicide Prevention Awareness Week, September 9-15, and World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. During the month of September organizations highlight suicide prevention efforts by advocating for prevention strategies and networking to share resources and information.
Studies by the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that suicide rates are rising. The rate of suicide has increased more than 30 percent in half of the states across the United States since 1999, with approximately 45,000 lives lost to suicide in 2016 alone. Research has shown that more than half of people who die by suicide did not have a known mental health condition.
It is important for people to learn how to recognize and respond to suicide. Research shows people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks after them in a caring way. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal ideation. Learn how to recognize and respond by paying attention to the warning signs of suicide:
- Feeling like a burden
- Being isolated
- Increased anxiety
- Feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Increased substance use
- Looking for a way to access lethal means
- Increased anger or rage
- Extreme mood swings
- Expressing hopelessness
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Talking or posting about wanting to die
- Making plans for suicide
If you notice any warning signs, starting a conversation with the person may save their life. Share the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number, 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) and be willing to assist the person with the call. Taking the person directly to help can be the best option to ensure they receive the help they need. Additional tips can be found at
how to talk about suicide. Your willingness to listen and help can save a life.
