In my Newsletter for August 2020 I identified and explained the responsibilities of a large quantity generator (LQG) of hazardous waste for preparedness, prevention and emergency procedures under USEPA regulations. In this month's Newsletter we'll look at some of the same requirements for a small quantity generator (SQG).
What equipment is required by a SQG in order to respond to an emergency? What testing and maintenance is required for that equipment? And, most importantly, what access to communication devices must be ensured by the SQG? Hint: it's "immediate"!
Also, check out my Q&A's and FAQ's below for answers to questions you may wish to ask.
Required Equipment for Small Quantity Generator of Hazardous Waste
USEPA regulations mandate a small quantity generator of hazardous waste (SQG) have certain required equipment for its emergency preparedness and response. These regulations were changed by the Generator Improvements Rule. The changes were not to the required equipment but to the areas of the SQG subject to the regulations and the responsibility of the SQG to select the appropriate locations for the equipment.
Testing and Maintenance of Required Equipment at Small Quantity Generator
These regulations were not changed much by the Generator Improvements Rule. It remains a critical requirement of the SQG to ensure the equipment used in an emergency is in good working order.
Access to Communications or Alarm Systems at Small Quantity Generator
These regulations were changed significantly by the Generator Improvements Rule. It is now the responsibility of the SQG to provide “direct or unimpeded access” to communications or alarm systems. This article takes a close look at the regulations and the USEPA’s guidance behind it to explain these complex regulations.
