Humane Society of Mason County Answers Mason County Sheriff's Call for Help, Rescuing Nine Saint Bernards Mix Dogs in a Heartbreaking Situation

Mason County, WA – 11/06/2023 – In an extraordinary response to a distress call from the Mason County Sheriff's Office, the Humane Society of Mason County swiftly and compassionately rescued nine Saint Bernards mix dogs, most of them seniors, who were guarding the body of their deceased owner for over 11 days. Working hand in hand with Mason County Sheriff deputies and the Mason County Coroner, the Humane Society of Mason County, with support from a Pierce County Animal Control Supervisor, successfully ensured the safe rescue and transportation of these beloved animals.



Upon receiving the urgent plea for assistance from the Mason County Sheriff's Office, the Humane Society of Mason County mobilized its dedicated team and reached out to their rescue partners for immediate support. Tacoma Humane Society answered the call, and placed some staff on standby for HSMC's arrival.

Over the course of six hours, the hard-working volunteers and Executive Director of the Humane Society of Mason County, along with Tacoma Humane Society and Pierce County Animal Control Supervisor, worked tirelessly to safely remove the nine dogs from the house. Using HSMC's customized animal control vehicle equipped with heated kennels, they transported the dogs to Tacoma Humane Society with the utmost care and dedication.

All the dogs were up in a loft bedroom with their beloved owner. This made for a incredibly difficult and dangerous situation for the HSMC team.

The oldest most senior dog had a container stuck to her head. Mason County Sheriffs office made quick work of getting the container removed.
