NIH relocates resources to a new website

The NIH has relocated its Public Access policy and related resources to a new website that houses all scientific data-sharing information and resources. The information can now be found here at https://sharing.nih.gov/public-access-policy under the Public Access Policy tab.

As a reminder, all peer-reviewed articles published resulting from projects supported through federal funding are required to be openly available to the public immediately upon acceptance for publication. All journal articles should be listed in the NIH’s PubMed Central database. Pay careful attention to the instructions provided by the journals you submit your articles to; it may be your responsibility to deposit the final published version to PubMed Central using the NIH’s tools and resources like MyNCBI. Using MyNCBI ensures compliance, allows us to pull the publications directly into NIH systems like Commons for reporting, and will provide you with a PMCID number that should be included in your bibliographies and works cited.

Please reach out to SPA if you have questions.

And the Award goes to...................

Sara Morgan!

We’d like to extend our many congratulations to Sara Morgan, PhD, CPO for being awarded the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists Outstanding Researcher Award 2024! This award recognizes those members performing outstanding research in the field of orthotics and prosthetics (O&P). For the past decade, Sara has authored or co-authored nearly 50 publications and 75 abstracts nationally and internationally in the O&P field. Much of her prior work has focused on prosthetic outcomes and outcome measure development, and she is now also working on spine orthopedics and orthotics research. She and her team have won multiple prestigious awards in O&P, including the Thranhardt award, and secured substantial grants to fund their research. She has also dedicated time to research-related service work in the O&P profession and currently serves as the Research Committee Chairperson for the Orthotics and Prosthetics Foundation for Education and Research.

Congrats Sara!

Susan Novotny, PhD promoted to Sr. Clinical Scientist of Gillette's Orthopedic Research Program

We are pleased to announce Dr. Susan Novotny’s promotion to Senior Clinical Scientist at Gillette Children’s. Susan is currently serving as Co-director of Gillette’s Orthopedic Research Program, in partnership with Dr. Jennifer Laine, MD.

The promotion to Senior Clinical Scientist was endorsed by a panel, comprised of peer scientists, clinical and research leaders within the institution. The panel reviewed Susan’s credentials, including the impact of Susan’s research on patient care, funding portfolio, publication and presentation history, service to professional organizations, collaborations with the University of Minnesota, as well as the translation of her work into clinical practice.

Susan’s expertise includes understanding the mechanisms underlying bone growth and remodeling in individuals with child-onset diseases, as well as designing interventional therapies that promote long-term skeletal health. Her passion for promoting long-term skeletal health in children makes her well- suited to drive orthopedic research at Gillette for conditions such as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, limb length discrepancy, and limb differences, as well as neuromuscular disorders. For Susan’s research profile and the Orthopedic Research program, please visit:
