Research Minutes Podcasts Win 2020 AVA Digital Awards, Kicking Off CPRE's 35th Anniversary Year

The
Consortium for Policy Research in Education
(CPRE), headquartered at the
University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education
(Penn GSE), has received two Gold 2020 AVA Design Awards in the category of Audio Production/Radio for episodes of its education research and policy podcast
Research Minutes
. The award comes one year after podcast managing editor Keith Heumiller, along with the communications team at CPRE, reinvigorated the format of the podcast in anticipation of CPRE's 35th anniversary in 2020.

The first award winner,
Free Pre-K: How Cities are Growing and Funding High Quality Programs
, explores two growing, subsidized early childhood education programs in Seattle and Philadelphia, funded respectively through pr
operty taxes and a citywide "soda tax," which have reported recent success in improving both quality and access for local families. The podcast
features interviews with Shante Brown (Director of Operations, PHLpreK), Milagros Nores (Research Co-Director, NIEER), and Phil Sirinides (Senior Researcher, ECDataWorks).

The second award winner, The Impacts of Immigration Enforcement on the Nation's Schools, looks at the ways American immigration enforcement efforts - both at the local and national levels - have had significant impacts on students, schools, and their surrounding communities, according to two recently published studies. The podcast features interviews with Thomas Dee (Stanford University), Patricia Gandara (UCLA), and Jongyeon Ee (Loyola Marymount).

Bridging The Divide: How Traditional and New Media Can Make Research More Actionable
2020 SREE Conference Friday, March 13 | 8 am ET (Studio B)
CPRE Jonathan Supovitz (University of Pennsylvania) will lead a panel discussion at this year's Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness (SREE) Spring conference. The panel will discuss practices for translating education research for more general audiences via traditional and new media. Panelists include representatives from Chalkbeat, Education Week, Education Dive, and the CPRE Knowledge Hub. Panelists will share their approaches to reporting, social media engagement, and the production of multimedia including video and podcasts, and discuss what they have learned of audience preferences, consumption trends, and effective methods for reaching and engaging with varying communities.
