RFP: Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research Program 2020
The Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research Program supports Assistant Professors of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of a cure for cancer. In line with the Stewart Trust’s mission to invest in innovative, cutting-edge, basic cancer research that may accelerate and advance progress toward a cure for cancer, applications are invited from nominees conducting cancer research.

Funding is available in the amount of $300,000 ($75,000 per year for a four-year period). The internal application deadline for this external limited submission is Monday, May 13, 2019.
Preparing Individuals for Translational Research Careers
Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 Postdoctoral Translational Scholars Program offered by the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR). This program is open campus-wide to individuals with Ph.D. degrees, who are interested in additional training in translational sciences.

The program provides trainees with an $85,000 career development award to be used over two years, and is loosely based on an NIH K23 grant format which includes a career development plan. Applications are due on September 10, 2019 at 5:00 PM.
Sharpening Your Focus: Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation
Brave Renew World
If your NIH grant is eligible for renewal (R03s and R21s are not, for example, but many R01s are—check the FOA and talk to a program officer), you will want to start planning your application well before you start running out of funding. Consider whether it makes sense to continue with the same long-term goal you began (science evolves, after all) and whether your overarching research question is still as significant as it was when you submitted your original proposal. For more information on submitting successful renewals, read the full Sharpening Your Focus article.
Leadership & Management
Dr. Runge Announces Call for Dean's Awards Nominations
Dr. Marschall S. Runge, M.D., Ph.D., Dean, University of Michigan Medical School, recently announced the 2019 call for nominations for the Dean's Awards Program. The seven annual faculty awards honor and recognize our outstanding educators, researchers, physicians, innovators, and community servants.

The deadline for nominations is May 24, 2019. Each award provides a $5,000 discretionary academic support prize. The winners will be announced in the fall, and they will be honored at the annual Dean’s Awards Dinner.
Medical School Leadership Renews Commitment to Invest in Research Strategy Focused on People
Medical School department chairs signed a 10-year agreement to finance the Research Strategic Investment Fund, providing ongoing financial support for a number of strategic investments, especially the retention, recruitment, and retraining of research faculty.

Pictured, Dr. Kevin Tremper, M.D., Ph.D. signs the agreement. Chair of the Anesthesiology Department, Dr. Tremper is the longest serving chair at Michigan Medicine.
Regulatory Review & Compliance
IT'S UP TO US: compliance.umich.edu
The University of Michigan’s Ethics, Integrity and Compliance new website, compliance.umich.edu, was developed by the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel, and Michigan Creative, based on user feedback and input from Compliance Officers across the University.

The website is designed to make it easier to find contact information for, and links to, topic-specific compliance offices across the University, and to report concerns through the existing compliance hotline.
Free Chemical Amnesty Days
U-M Medical School Facilities and Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) are partnering to offer FREE Chemical Amnesty Days to all Medical School laboratory occupants throughout the months of April and May.

Faculty and staff can free up lab space by safely disposing of expired, unknown, or unneeded chemicals. Please note: no manifests are required; all manifesting will be completed by HAZMAT representatives on-site.
Revised Escalation Plan for UMOR Controlled Substances Monitoring Program
In an effort to further strengthen, safeguard, and support research at the University of Michigan, the U-M Office of Research (UMOR) Controlled Substances Monitoring Program has introduced a revised escalation plan for individuals who use controlled substances in research.

Central to the plan is an institutional commitment to increased transparency through more clearly defined roles/responsibilities for research personnel to remain in compliance, as well as the development of a corrective action process that outlines the steps that may be taken by UMOR in instances of continued and/or serious non-compliance with U-M, state, and federal policies and regulations. Two town halls will be held to discuss the changes and answer questions on Monday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 17.
Research Resources
Brighton Center Open for Clinical Research
In February, the Brighton Center for Specialty Care opened its doors for conducting clinical research. To aid researchers, Brighton Center provides approximately nine touchdown workstations and a Clinical Research Specimen Processing Core. This new core offers centrifuges, an incubator, microscope, and other lab resources. View a complete list of the available equipment and supplies.

All research involving investigational products that are either administered or dispensed at the Brighton Center must be managed by the Research Pharmacy, in conjunction with the pharmacy staff on site.
Access U-M Weight Management Program Biospecimens
The Central Biorepository enables access to the hundreds of available Weight Management Program (WMP) biospecimens from Michigan Medicine patients, and offers secure linkage to laboratory and clinical data offered by the Data Office.

Biospecimens available include DNA, frozen adipose biopsy, frozen muscle biopsy, plasma, serum, urine and urine derivatives, whole blood, and RNA. The study has more than 1,300 participants and more than 48,000 biological samples available. Get started today!
Training & Events
Register Today! Working With Industry: Part One
Join the Medical School Office of Research for the two-part series, Working with Industry on April 16. Poverty Alleviation to Address Health Disparities
Dr. Rita Hamad, M.D., Ph.D., University of California, San Francisco, will present at U-M on Wednesday, May 1 with IHPI as part of the Emerging Scholars Exchange Program.

There is conflicting evidence on the health benefits of poverty alleviation programs like the U.S. earned income tax credit or microcredit lending interventions. Dr. Hamad will present her research that delves into these inconsistent findings.
Training Opportunity: U-M Mixed Methods Research Workshops
The Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan is offering two mixed methods research workshops in May and June:

Celebrating its 10th Cohort: FFMI fast PACE
In March, the Fast Forward Medical Innovation (FFMI) Commercialization Education team launched its 10th cohort and fifth year of FFMI fast PACE, a four-week program that provides a real-world learning experience for researchers exploring the commercial viability of a biomedical technology.

In addition to fastPACE, FFMI offers other courses for researchers and clinicians, including FFMI full PACE, a 12-week structured course that provides hands-on learning and expert guidance to produce de-risked ideas for potential biomedical innovation. The education team also partners with other teams across the U-M campus for special programs such as the Path of Excellence: Innovation & Entrepreneurship, the Biotech Career Development program, and the Aikens Innovation Academy at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
