Lousy Figures.png

Graphs and other illustrations can boost the effectiveness of many scientific manuscripts. Poorly designed figures, however, risk obscuring your message and even misleading your reader. Steve Claas, from the CPH Office of Scientific Writing, will present some common gaffs made when creating scientific illustrations and discuss ways to avoid making them.

Funding Opportunities

Research in Transforming Health and Healthcare Systems: Advancing Policies to Improve the Affordability of Care and Address Structural Racism and Discrimination

Agency: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)

Description: The purpose of the 2022 RTHS call for proposals (CFP) is to support policy-relevant, community-engaged research that helps improve the affordability of care for communities most impacted by structural racism, inequities, and discrimination. We seek proposals for research and policy analysis projects that examine the design, implementation, and/or impact of local, state, and/or national policies related to the affordability of high-quality, equitable care, with the goal of generating timely and useful information for use by policymakers and other decision-makers.

To be considered for funding, the proposed project must be led or co-led by people directly impacted by the policy being studied, such as a community-based organization or advocacy group comprised of people from the community of focus. Funding will range from $50,000 to $350,000 per project to accommodate projects of nine to 36 months.

An informational webinar for applicants will be held on May 3, 2022 (2–3 p.m. ET) to provide an overview of the CFP and offer an opportunity for participants to ask questions about the program and the grantmaking process. Registration is required and is available on the AcademyHealth website.

Closing Date: June 24, 2022

RWJF - Food and Health Research Using the Consumer Food Data System

Agency: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Description: RWJF and the USDA, Economic Research Service (ERS) are announcing a call for proposals (CFP) for researchers who will use one or more restricted-use data assets in the USDA’s Consumer Food Data System (CFDS). We seek to develop a cohort of CFDS researchers from a diversity of academic disciplines and institutions who will produce policy-relevant research on food policy, food retail markets, consumer behaviors related to food purchases and diet, and USDA nutrition assistance programs. We encourage applications from researchers who have not previously received external funding.

Awards for selected proposals are intended to encourage researchers from a range of backgrounds to: (a) develop new research projects that feature restricted-use CFDS assets; or (b) incorporate restricted-use CFDS data assets into ongoing (pre-existing) research projects.

RWJF anticipates making approximately 12 to 15 awards of up to $100,000 each and will provide additional funds that are needed to access data through the Federal Statistical Research Data Centers. Grant periods will extend from the date of award (anticipated to be in November 2022 for many grantees) to February 2025.
