Funding Opportunities

CCTS High Impact and Early Career Pilot RFA

Early Career Investigator Pilot Award &

Innovation and High Impact Award

LOI Due Date: August 25, 2022

Full Application Due Date: November 3, 2022

The UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science is now accepting applications for Pilot Projects. The main priorities for funding are:

  • Clear clinical and translational relevance.
  • The likelihood that funding will result in a competitive application for extramural funding.
  • Where appropriate, priority will be awarded based upon the strength of the research team or, for early career investigators, the mentorship team.
  • Multidisciplinary research teams representing the basic, clinical and/or applied sciences with an emphasis on bridging the divisions between basic and clinical scientists.
  • Capacity for overall impact on health of Appalachia.

Early Career Investigator Pilot Award: This award is intended to support pilot studies by early stage investigators (NIH definition) to obtain preliminary data for an extramural grant submission. The maximum award will be $25,000 which must be spent over 12 months. This award is only open to investigators in the early stage of their career, or investigators who are transitioning into a new area. Applicants must identify a mentor to assist with the investigator’s training.

Innovation And High Impact Pilot Award: This award is for investigators at all stages of career development—early career, midlevel, and senior investigators—and is intended to stimulate innovation and to support pilot studies that will lead to extramural funding. The total award is limited to $50,000 which must be spent over 12 months.

NIH - Research to Action: Assessing and Addressing Community Exposures to Environmental Contaminants

(R01 Clinical Trial Optional) - PAR-22-210

Description: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages multidisciplinary projects to investigate the potential health risks of environmental exposures of concern to a community and to develop and implement an environmental public health action plan based on research findings. Projects supported under this program will employ community-engaged research methods to conduct research and to translate research findings into public health action. This announcement reflects NIEHS’ and NIMHD's commitment to environmental health disparities and environmental justice research. This FOA also advances efforts to nurture and sustain trust and bi-directional communication between academic researchers and affected communities. The Research to Action program is part of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) “Partnerships for Environmental Public Health” (PEPH) network (https://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/supported/translational/peph/index.cfm)

HEAL Initiative: Research Studies to Develop and Implement Interventions to Prevent Opioid Misuse in Community Health Centers

(R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required)

Description: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) seeks to establish the evidence base for interventions that can effectively prevent opioid and other substance misuse in community health centers (CHCs), a setting which serves populations at increased risk for substance misuse. While there are effective interventions to prevent substance misuse, generally, there is a gap in interventions designed for use in CHCs, and knowledge as to the factors that support implementation of those interventions is lacking. This FOA seeks to address the urgency and magnitude of the opioid crisis in populations that experience health disparities by developing and testing new or adapted interventions to prevent opioid misuse among patients served by community health centers (CHCs), and/or by developing and testing implementation strategies for screening and referral to preventive interventions for misuse of opioids and other substances among patients served by CHCs.

This initiative seeks research that will ultimately enhance the capacity of CHCs to screen patients for opioid and substance use risk and refer them to or provide opioid and other substance use prevention services. The two areas of research interest are studies to

  1. Develop and test new or adapted interventions to prevent opioid misuse among patients served by community health centers (CHCs), and/or
  2. Develop and test implementation strategies for screening and referral to preventive interventions for misuse of opioids and other substances among patients served by CHCs.

Research projects should be developed in consultation and partnership with CHCs. Strong partnerships are critical for ensuring that proposed research activities are responsive to the needs of the community and maximize the likelihood that interventions developed and tested can be sustained. Applicants are strongly encouraged to address issues of patient/stakeholder engagement; scalability beyond the study sites/settings; sustainability beyond the funding period; and whether the proposed implementation strategy/process reduces inequities in service availability, access, utilization, cost, quality, or outcomes.

Applications should focus on primary prevention, developing and testing strategies that CHCs can take to scale in order to prevent the initiation of opioid/substance use or misuse and/or the progression to opioid or other substance use disorder.
