 UK Research Scholars Program

Call for Nominations

The Research Scholars Program (RSP) is a one-year, multicomponent career development program designed to promote research success for junior faculty, particularly those from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research (as defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH; NOT-OD-20-031).

More details about the RSP can be found here. Program components include:

  1. Several levels of mentorship, coaching, and sponsorship
  2. Professional development programming
  3. Inclusive networking by connecting to a larger supportive scientific and social community.

Two cohorts of Research Scholars have successfully completed the program thus far, see the website for details about the previous Research Scholars. This year, the program intends to recruit a cohort of up to six University of Kentucky (UK) faculty members from diverse disciplines across campus.

Eligibility criteria:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Doctoral-level degree (MD, PhD, DMD, DDS, DO, PharmD)
  • Full-time UK Regular Title Series or Research Title Series Assistant or Associate Professor
  • Commitment of at least 30% effort to research
  • Priority is given to investigators who have not yet achieved significant extramural funding as Principal Investigator

Nomination process: Nominations for the RSP must be submitted by the faculty member’s mentor, chair, dean, center director, or research supervisor. The attached document describes the process for nominations.

Due: Nominations will be accepted until January 13th, 2023.

Application Instructions

HEAL Initiative: Preventing Opioid Misuse and Co-Occurring Conditions by Intervening on Social Determinants (R01 - Clinical Trials Optional)

Purpose: Through the HEAL Initiative, NIH requests applications for studies designed to develop and test sustainable, scalable interventions to prevent opioid misuse, opioid use disorder, and co-occurring mental health conditions by intervening directly on social determinants of health (SDOH). This initiative aims to build an evidence base for preventive interventions that address inequities, social risks and/or social disadvantage. Interventions targeting social determinants may be structural (e.g. policy, regulatory, or systemic-wide changes) or designed to alter outcomes of individuals affected by contextual risk factors, and may be implemented in conjunction with psychosocial interventions designed to address behavioral risks.

Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Data

(R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

Agency: National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

Purpose: The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite applications proposing innovative analysis of existing social science, behavioral, administrative, and neuroimaging data to study the etiology and epidemiology of substance using behaviors (defined as alcohol, tobacco, prescription, and other substances) and related disorders, prevention of substance use and HIV, and health service utilization. This FOA encourages the analyses of public use and other extant community-based or clinical datasets to their full potential in order to increase our knowledge of etiology, trajectories of substance using behaviors and their consequences including morbidity and mortality, risk and resilience in the development of psychopathology, strategies to guide the development, testing, implementation, and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient services for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorder and HIV. Primary data collection is not allowed for applications in response to this FOA.

Letter of Intent Due Date(s): 30 days prior to submission due date. See full announcement for an outlined of dates.
