Wanted: Undergraduate Research Mentors

If you are interested in working with an undergraduate on research, please volunteer to be part of CPH 395. As part of this course, faculty mentor 1 to 3 undergraduate students a semester. In the past, students have provided support to faculty by conducting literature reviews, cleaning data, performing simple data analyses, and collecting data.

Please fill out this very short survey as soon as possible to volunteer. If you haven’t participated in CPH 395 before but would like to learn more, please read this FAQ or check out our undergraduate research web page. You can also email Sarah Vos ([email protected]), director of undergraduate research, with any questions.

Research Leadership Career Development

The purpose of the Research Leadership Academy’s Research Leadership Development Program is to cultivate and support efforts of faculty and staff who have the potential to lead research projects, special programs, or programs that align with their college’s research priorities and/or lead multidisciplinary cross- college research efforts.

Details, Events & Concierge Activities

  • Competitive application process that results in selection of 6 participants with a duration of 1 year
  • Focus on diversity, equity and inclusion values and actions as an integral component
  • Kick-off meeting where applicants describe their research leadership goals, five-year plan, and research project, including the project’s college alignment.
  • Weekly meetings and/or professional development workshops to assist with progress on specific goals for project implementation and reporting of progress.
  • Numerous enrichment opportunities

Eligibility

Senior-level faculty and staff involved in research are eligible to be nominated for the RLA Research Leadership Development Program. Nominees must have the support of their college dean and ADR to apply. The college must agree to contribute support (at least 10% effort) as professional and/or research effort.

Timeline

The RLA Leadership Development Program will accept applications until March 31, 2023. Applications will be reviewed by a select panel, and projects will begin July 1, 2023. Up to six participants will be selected for the program.

Research Themes for Research Program

The purpose of the Emerging Themes for Research Program is to support emerging research that creates, grows, and sustains a healthier, wealthier, and wiser Kentucky.

The intent of the program, with potentially a three-year duration, is to develop new, nationally competitive, transdisciplinary research programs. Proposed collaborations, activities and/or infrastructure will promote the formation of a critical mass of innovators, who can “take the next step” toward national prominence as exemplified by significant long-term funding, innovative discovery and/or transformational impact in the thematic area proposed.

Eligibility

Teams of faculty and/or staff with relevant expertise and evidence of success in the field of study who are involved in STEM+H research and who have the support of their college deans are eligible to apply. Demonstration of diversity, equity, and inclusion among the membership of the emerging theme is expected. The Program Leader should devote at least 10% effort to the emerging theme.

Preparatory Invited Full Application Process

Prior to submission of the invited full application, applicants are required to participate in a process, in collaboration with the RLA and other parts of UK’s research infrastructure, that is intended to facilitate development of their emerging area of research.

UK Equipment Competition

Purpose: To continue to modernize our research capabilities, and to assist in replacing aging research equipment, we are holding an equipment competition to facilitate:

  • Acquisition of major equipment that will be housed within an institutional research core facility
  • Acquisition of shared equipment that has a large user base
  • Acquisition of equipment or equipment clusters that will enable novel analysis capabilities
  • Replacement of essential pieces of dedicated equipment within individual laboratories or in shared-use equipment facilities
  • Acquisition of new equipment essential to individual research program(s)
  • Equipment that is being included in an external grant proposal which requires matching institutional support for the equipment budget.

The following rules and guidelines apply to this competition:

  • Equipment that costs > $10,000 is eligible.
  • Equipment that costs > $100,000 requires matching funds (a minimum of 20% of the total equipment costs, from single or multiple sources).
  • Matching funds for equipment < $100,000, is not required but will improve submission competitiveness.
  • Equipment requests can be for dedicated use within an individual laboratory or for shared-use. Shared-use equipment facilitating research of several investigators or that will be available within an institutional core facility will be given higher priority.
  • For dedicated equipment within an individual laboratory, only one piece of equipment may be requested per applicant.
  • Equipment maintenance, installation costs, remodeling or renovation requests will not be supported with equipment funds from the OVPR.
  • Proposals should be submitted electronically to the OVPR portal (https://ris.uky.edu/pdo/fundingportal/) by April 3, 2023. Notifications will be made June 1, and funds will carry forward to the next fiscal year.

New Resource on Campus for Substance Use Researchers

The Survivors Union of the Bluegrass is now available for consultation with UK faculty and graduate students who are planning and/or conducting substance use research. The UK community should take advantage of the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from this board.

Community Advisory Board Opportunity for Faculty and Graduate Students

The Survivors Union of the Bluegrass (SUB), a community advisory board comprised of people who use drugs (PWUD) or are in non-abstinence recovery, is now accepting applications for researcher and graduate student visits. SUB members use their experience and expertise to offer UK researchers feedback on the development, design, and dissemination of projects that enroll PWUD, have substance use outcomes, or otherwise involve the drug use community. The SUB meets monthly on a weekday evening over Zoom. Visitors are given at least 30 minutes to present their project and have an informal discussion with board members. All researchers must meet with the SUB chairperson and liaison (a UK staff member) prior to their visit to review meeting logistics and researcher discussion questions. To protect the privacy of board members, all visitors must be unanimously approved by the board prior to being admitted.

If you are interested in discussing your research with the SUB, you can learn more and apply here.

For questions about the SUB, please contact Trevor Moffitt ([email protected])

NIH - Community Level Interventions to Improve Minority Health and Reduce Health Disparities

(R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

Agency: National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

Description: This initiative will support research projects to develop and test prospective community-level interventions to improve minority health and decrease health disparities. Community-level intervention projects are expected to have the following features:

  • Are led by or conducted in full partnership with appropriate community partners, such as community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, local businesses, neighborhood associations, labor unions, patient or consumer advocacy groups, public health departments, healthcare systems, school systems, law enforcement or criminal justice agencies, social service agencies, or departments of commerce, labor, transportation, housing, recreation. Multi-sectoral collaborations involving partnerships with multiple types of organizations in the public and private sector are strongly encouraged.
  • Are focused on improving health outcomes or reducing health disparities in one or more NIH-designated health disparity populations in the US.
  • Are focused on the entire population in communities (e.g., an intervention to increase the availability of fresh produce or walkable green spaces) or a specific population within communities (e.g., an intervention to improve physical activity among high school students or older adults within the community).
  • Are guided by a conceptual model identifying hypothesized pathways between the community-level intervention, community-level determinants, and health outcomes.
  • Collect or obtain data beyond individual self-report to determine how the intervention is impacting community-level determinants of health.
  • Are supported by relevant preliminary data. It is not required for the community-level intervention to have been pilot tested in multiple communities.
  • Prospectively test the impact of interventions on self-reported or measured health outcomes. Retrospective analysis of existing or past community-level interventions or initiatives are not responsive to this initiative.
  • Include health outcomes at the individual, interpersonal/organizational, or community level, or a combination.
  • Use appropriate measures and analytic methods appropriate for examining community-level mechanisms of action and health outcomes.
  • Test interventions that have the potential to be sustainable in the community after project funding is over.

Application budgets are limited to $1,000,000 direct costs annually, not including Consortium F&A costs. The maximum project period is 5 years.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to reach out to the relevant scientific contacts to discuss whether their applications are responsive.
