Data Management and Sharing Plan

Sample DMS Plans

Working on your Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan?

Check out our expanded selection of sample DMS Plans for inspiration!

We have made these sample DMS Plans available for educational purposes only. Note that these samples are not intended to be used as templates and their use does not guarantee approval by NIH.

Do Not Include Hypertext

As you develop your Data Management and Sharing Plans, make sure you do not include hypertext (e.g., hyperlinks and URLs) in the DMS Plan attachment. NIH hyperlink policy applies to DMS Plans and NIH may withdraw your application from consideration if you include them.

For example, in the DMS Plan attachment, you should include the name of the proposed data repository but do not provide the link or URL.

For more format guidance and other details on what to include, see the Writing a Data Management & Sharing Plan page.

Step-by-step Checklist for HEAL-compliant Data

The HEAL Data Stewardship Group is excited to share the next webinar in our series. Please join us on Thursday, January 19 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Eastern Time for Step-by-step Checklist for HEAL-compliant Data.

Webinar Description: Since its launch in 2018, the NIH HEAL Initiative® has grown significantly and now consists of 42 distinct programs funding over 1,000 studies. Each of these programs and studies is generating vast amounts of data with the potential to accelerate scientific discovery around pain and opioid use disorders; however, investigators must first take the necessary steps to ensure their study’s data complies with the HEAL Public Access and Data Sharing Policy

Effective data sharing greatly increases the likelihood of quickly discovering effective treatments and interventions for those affected by these critical public health crises. To help investigators understand where they are in the data sharing process, the HEAL Data Stewardship Group (HEAL Stewards) has developed a checklist detailing the necessary steps and associated resources for HEAL-compliant data.

In this webinar, Kira Bradford and Allie Gartland-Gray of the HEAL Stewards will lead a presentation walking investigators through the newly developed HEAL-compliant Data Checklist. The presentation will be followed by a live Q&A with Bradford, Gartland-Gray, and NIH representatives focused on data sharing and how making your data HEAL-compliant sets you up for success with the 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy and accelerates your research and publications.

NIH - Effectiveness of Implementing Sustainable Evidence-Based Mental Health Practices in Low-Resource Settings to Achieve Mental Health Equity for Traditionally Underserved Populations

(R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

Description: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages studies that develop and test the effectiveness of strategies for the implementation and sustainable delivery of evidence-based mental health treatments and services to improve mental health outcomes for underserved populations in low-resourced settings in the United States. Studies should identify and use innovative approaches to remediate barriers to provision, receipt, and/or benefit from evidence-based practices (EBPs) and generate new information about factors integral to achieving equity in mental health outcomes for underserved populations. Research generating new information about factors causing/reducing disparities are strongly encouraged, including due consideration of the needs of individuals across the lifespan.

RWJF Health Policy Research Scholars

Agency: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)

Description: Health Policy Research Scholars (HPRS) is a four-year national leadership development program for full-time doctoral students from nonclinical, research-focused disciplines in which policy is a key lever for change (e.g., urban planning; political science; economics; anthropology; education; social work; sociology). HPRS is designed for students who are committed to ensuring their research is aligned with the health needs of communities. The program is focused on doctoral students who want to improve health, well-being, and equity; challenge longstanding, entrenched systems; exhibit new ways of working; collaborate across disciplines and sectors; and bolster their leadership skills.

The goal of HPRS is to cultivate transformational leaders from diverse backgrounds with doctoral training—representing a wide range of research-focused disciplines—who will inform and influence policy toward a Culture of Health. Specifically, we aim to recruit doctoral students from a variety of fields/disciplines (e.g., urban planning; political science; economics; anthropology; education; engineering; geography; and lab/bench sciences) who are seeking to use policy change to advance population health and health equity. We strongly encourage applications from nonhealth-related disciplines; having scholars from diverse fields is critical to advancing a Culture of Health. Up to 40 scholars will be selected for the 2023 cohort.

Award: Stipend: $30,000 per year for up to four years or until you complete your doctoral program (whichever is sooner).

Administrative fee: Home institutions may include an administrative fee of $1,000 per year, $4,000 in total to the grant amount to cover the administrative costs of managing the award.

Closing Date: March 15, 2023
