Public Health Services and Systems Research Interest Group Call for Abstracts

AcademyHealth Conference

June 4-7, 2022, Washington, DC (In-Person)

Interest Group (IG) Meeting Day/Time: TBA

Submission Deadline: Friday, February 4, 2022, 5:00pm Eastern

PHSSR IG Overview:

The AcademyHealth Public Health Services and Systems Research (PHSSR) Interest Group (IG) provides information about the infrastructure of public health — its organization, workforce, financing, infrastructure, and management — and its role within the broader health system. PHSSR’s evidence-based research and practices allow public health practitioners and policymakers to make informed decisions about strengthening the public health system, thereby improving the health of the population. The COVID-19 pandemic has created an urgent need for multiple sectors to identify solutions to improve population health, and there is a critical need for PHSSR to inform policy and practice.

The goals of the 2022 PHSSR IG Session are to:

  1. Connect with PHSSR researchers and practitioners
  2. Share diverse perspectives and rigorous scientific research
  3. Address the relationship between the PHSSR infrastructure and the COVID-19 pandemic, other critical public health issues, and health equity

To submit, please visit the 2022 PHSSR IG Call for Abstracts submission site. This is a Google Form.

Funding Opportunities

Igniting Research Collaboration Program

UK funding opportunity for faculty members who are looking to develop a new collaborative project may be interested in the Igniting Research Collaboration Program.

The IRC Pilot must be a NEW collaboration of faculty from at least 2 different colleges. The maximum budget amount is $50,000. Typical awards are in the $25,000 - $30,000 range. Salary for faculty is not allowed. The budget period is for 6 months, July 1, 2022–December 31, 2022.

The first informational event was held January 12th and recording can be found HERE.

IRC will host a Networking Event on February 16 from 2-5 pm where faculty members from the various colleges meet each other. It’s a great way to meet new people, incubate new ideas, and apply for pilot seed money to fund a new project.

Pilot Research Projects in Cancer -

American Cancer Society Institutional Research

A new cycle of funding opportunities for pilot projects in cancer research under an Institutional Research Grant to the University of Kentucky from the American Cancer Society. This grant is awarded to the University to provide pilot funds for the initiation of promising new cancer research projects led by junior faculty members so they can obtain preliminary results to enable them to compete successfully for national research grants. Junior faculty must be at the level of Assistant Professors, or their equivalent, and not currently receiving substantial national funding.

Applications for this cycle of funding are due February 23, 2022, at

5 p.m. Individual allocations under the Institutional Research Grant may be made up to a maximum of $30,000.

Access the following links for the application form and guidelines. Questions and/or completed applications should be submitted to J. Bybee at jennifer.bybee@uky.edu .

All applications will be peer-reviewed by a multidisciplinary institutional research review committee. Applicant’s abstract and biosketches will be shared with all review committee members. Both the relationship to cancer and high scientific merit will be important considerations in the review process.

The start date for applications in this cycle is June 01, 2022.

All studies must be compliant for all regulatory entities (IRB, IACUC, IBC) prior to the start date.
