The KY Cabinet for Health & Family Services (CHFS) is once again soliciting proposals for consideration under their State University Partnership (SUP) mechanism. CHFS has used this program in the past to solicit projects that are of interest to their mission, especially serving Medicaid enrollees. They are able to draw down 50/50 federal matching monies, and academic institutions are required to put forward the matching funds (must be non-federal dollars; if you plan to use your state salary as the match, you may want to check with your department chair or dean). 

CHFS is only asking for 2-page proposals that fit within their interest areas and NOT full proposals, with a budget. The pdf “Research Topics for Universities” outlines specific interests, but CHFS has indicated that they are open to considering other proposals. The WORD document “SUP_Proposal_Tmp 2022 v2.0.docx” should be used to prepare the 2-page proposals.

Please submit your 2-page proposals directly to CHFS by Friday, July 15^th. Proposals should be emailed to [email protected], cc’ing [email protected] and [email protected].

Since these 2-pagers are essentially letters of intent without a specific budget request, it is not necessary to obtain OSPA review at this point. If you receive a subsequent request from CHFS to submit a more detailed proposal and budget, you will then need to seek appropriate approvals through OSPA’s regular eIAF process.

The Washington University Diabetes Research Center (DRC) anticipates funding new Pilot & Feasibility Awards through an ongoing collaborative program with the University of Kentucky starting 12/1/22, pending competitive renewal of NIDDK funding in 2022. The goal of this program is to develop preliminary data leading to the submission of new applications for independent (NIH, JDRF, or ADA) research grants.

• Applicants must hold a faculty appointment and be independent investigators in any department at University of Kentucky. Postdoctoral Fellows or their equivalent are not eligible.
• Grants of up to $40,000 (direct costs) for one year will be awarded.

UNITE is seeking applications focused on collaborative research in racial equity for humanities disciplines. Pilot funding is available to support projects of merit that explore racial equity through a humanities/humanistic social sciences lens. Proposals should convene groups of two or more scholars in pursuit of impactful work focused on racial equity.

A maximum of $12,000 will be awarded for a period of 12 months.

Rapid Response Mini-Grants

UK-CARES Rapid Response Mini-Grants of up to $10,000 are available to strengthen applications for extramural research funding (for example, NIH R or K-awards or awards from private foundations) or address reviewer’s comments for a manuscript. For example, funds can be used for personnel support, analysis of existing biological samples or environmental sampling with existing populations. 

The main priorities for funding are to:

1. Help strengthen applications for extramural research grants or to address reviewer’s comments for a manuscript
2. Improve the scientific merit of the project
3. Increase the likelihood that funding will result in submission of a competitive application for extramural funding. 

Award priorities will be consistent with the mission of UK CARES: to contribute to the science of the prevention and treatment of environmentally-induced diseases. Where appropriate, priority will be awarded based upon the strength of the research team including citizen scientists or, for early-career investigators, the mentorship team and citizen scientists. Other priorities for funding include:

• Significance of the clinical and/or translational work in terms of potential environmental health impact.
• Relevance of the clinical and/or translational work to the health of Appalachian Kentucky
• Scientific rigor and novelty of the proposed approach.
• Experience and productivity of the investigators.
• Multidisciplinary research teams representing the basic, clinical and/or population sciences with an emphasis on bridging the divisions between basic and population scientists.
• Pilot studies, which generate critical preliminary data that will lead to subsequent external funding and/or commercial development.
• Health topics of interest to NIEHS (https://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/index.cfm)

These grants are limited to no more than seven (7) months in duration. Because of the short duration of these proposals, the required documentation such as IRB, IACUC, etc., needs to be in place at the time of submission. This mechanism will not fund clinical trials (NIH definition).

The NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) on Obesity and Cardiovascular Diseases, in collaboration with the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS) announce the availability of limited funds to support pilot projects focused on research examining obesity-associated diseases. Emphasis for support will be placed on pilot projects that examine the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, COVID-19, cancer, or neurodegenerative diseases.  These pilot grants are intended to assist investigators new to this area of research to generate sufficient data to be competitive for extramural funding. 

**This is the final year of the Obesity-related Phase III COBRE so there is a strong chance that this will be the last Pilot Call under this mechanism. 

Funding Amount: Individual project awards (up to $50,000 in direct costs only) will be made on a competitive basis and must be spent by July 31, 2023.

Eligibility is limited to full-time regular, special, and clinical title faculty as well as full-time research faculty of the University of Kentucky. Junior faculty members are especially encouraged to apply. Investigators in training including residents, post-doctoral fellows, and clinical fellows are not eligible to serve as PIs but may be co-investigators.
