Funding Opportunities

UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science in Partnership with Appalachian Translational Research Network (ATRN) Institutions Grant

University of Kentucky/West Virginia University Collaborative Grant

One award of up to $50,000, in total direct cost, will be given to a clinical and translational project that will address health and health care issues relevant to the WVCTSI and UKCCTS and that is likely to lead to longer-term collaborative efforts will receive the strongest consideration for funding. This includes not only biomedical, clinical, and population research, but also research in areas that enhance clinical and translational research, such as biomedical informatics, biostatistics research and community-based projects. Award duration is 12 months.

  • The proposal must be joint applications by collaborators from the University of Kentucky (UK) and West Virginia University.
  • Investigators in training including residents, post-doctoral fellows, and clinical fellows are NOT eligible to serve as PIs but may be co-investigators.
  • Volunteer faculty and adjunct faculty are NOT eligible to serve as PIs but may be co- investigators

University of Kentucky/University of Cincinnati Collaborative Grant

One award of up to $50,000, in total direct cost, will be given to a meritorious project that involves collaboration between investigators at UK CCTS and the University of Cincinnati CCTST. This project will involve an equal contribution from each institution, and will require Co-PI's from each institution. Award duration is 12 months.

The research award is designed to stimulate collaboration between the respective campuses. Specifically, this joint award aims to catalyze the development or enhance the maturation of multi-institutional research teams capable of performing highly innovative, extramurally fundable research that will continue to contribute to the health and wellbeing of Appalachia. The research topic must be related to clinical and translational science and can be any health-related topic that addresses a significant health issue identified by the community. Research activities may include but are not limited to: conducting community assessments, analyzing existing data, pilot testing data collection instruments or procedures, conducting formative research on intervention strategies or messages, and testing intervention feasibility.

2023 ATRN RFA

NIH - Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Data

(R21 Clinical Trial Optional)

Description: The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite applications proposing innovative analysis of existing social science, behavioral, administrative, and neuroimaging data to study the etiology and epidemiology of substance using behaviors (defined as alcohol, tobacco, prescription, and other substances) and related disorders, prevention of substance use and HIV, and health service utilization. This FOA encourages the analyses of public use and other extant community-based or clinical datasets to their full potential in order to increase our knowledge of etiology, trajectories of substance using behaviors and their consequences, including morbidity and mortality, risk and resilience in the development of psychopathology, strategies to guide the development, testing, implementation, and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient services for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorder and HIV. Primary data collection is not allowed for applications in response to this FOA.

NIH - Pilot Interventions to Integrate Social Care and Medical Care to Improve Health Equity

(R01—Clinical Trial Required)

Description: This NIDDK Funding Opportunity Announcement will support pilot and feasibility trials to test interventions that involve screening for and addressing adverse social determinants of health (SDoH), also called social risks, during a health care visit. Patients’ endorsed social needs could be addressed by appropriately referring/navigating patients or caregivers to resources that address these issues at social service organizations located externally or co-located in the healthcare system. The trials will determine 1) feasibility and acceptability of screening for social risks, identifying social needs and implementing referral service linkages (e.g., addressing transportation and housing needs, food insecurity, etc.) within the context of a healthcare visit, and 2) preliminary signals of the intervention’s impact on both the social risk/need(s) and NIDDK disease outcomes. Preliminary data regarding intervention efficacy are not required. The proposed pilot and feasibility clinical trials should lay the foundation for larger clinical trials to integrate social care and medical care and improve health outcomes related to the prevention and/or treatment of diseases within the mission of NIDDK. It is expected that these pilot studies will begin to delineate promising practices for future equitable and effective “real world” implementation of social and medical care integration. The overarching goal of this FOA is to develop pragmatic approaches that can be used in health care settings to reduce health disparities in diseases within the mission of NIDDK and achieve health equity, especially among individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups, rural populations, sexual and gender minority groups, and other socioeconomically disadvantaged and medically underserved communities.
