Funding Opportunities

The University of Kentucky Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program is accepting applications!

Applications are due at 11:59PM Friday, October 14, 2022

The BIRCWH program constitutes one element of a broader and growing federal focus on advancing research in women's health and sex differences. The NIH Office of Research on Women's Health, which houses the BIRCWH program, was established 32 years ago to better include women and women's health in clinical research and science.

This call for applications is for a 12-month appointment during which selected faculty are expected to complete training in the ethical conduct of research, participate in seminars, and set the foundation to become established, independent researchers in women's health. This NIH training grant covers 75% of Scholars’ protected time to focus on research to accomplish these goals. Associates’ protected time for research (30-50%) is negotiated with UK Colleges. The Associate program is ideal for untenured faculty beginning their career at UK with start-up funding, or those without US Citizenship/Permanent Residency.

The UK BIRCWH program offers numerous resources, including mentorship, networking, professional and career development, and manuscript and grant writing assistance. Our goal is to support BIRCWH members on their trajectory to becoming independent and funded women’s health researchers.

UK for KY Rapid Response Pilot Program on How Climate Change Affects Human Health

Agency: Kentucky Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS)

Description: The UK for KY Rapid Response Pilot Program has been launched in response to the recent flooding in Eastern Kentucky and increasing climate-related health challenges in general. The program aims to support faculty in any UK college who propose research through the lens of how climate change affects human health, or what tools and technologies can be developed to foster climate resilience and to help people affected by climate change and weather-related disasters. Funding and support for the new grant program are provided by UK-CARES, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), the Center for the Environment, and the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment. Investigators may request up to $20,000 in pilot funding or mini-grants up to $5,000. The awards are intended to stimulate innovation, develop multidisciplinary research that addresses impacts of climate change on human health, and generate data for extramural funding proposals. Submissions will be reviewed and awards granted as applications are received; applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible because program funds might be depleted.

Closing Date: October 31, 2022

NIH - NIDA REI: Reaching Equity at the Intersection of HIV and Substance Use: Novel Approaches to Address HIV Related Health Disparities in Underserved Racial and/or Ethnic Populations

(R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

Description: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is a part of NIDA’s Racial Equity Initiative (REI), with goals that include promoting racial equity in NIDA’s research portfolio. The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate new observational and intervention research on structural factors, organizational practices, policies, and other social, cultural, and contextual influences that lead to inequities at the intersection of HIV and substance use among underserved racial and/or ethnic minority populations affected by persistent HIV disparities. Research that addresses the multiple dimensions of individuals’ identity (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity) and social systems as they intersect with one another is encouraged.
