Undergraduate Research Mentors Wanted
Faculty members have had a lot of success working with students on grant-funded research, other faculty-driven projects or working with students on student-directed research. Our undergraduate students are very talented, and this program is restricted to our highest-performing students. In the past, students have helped with literature reviews, collected and analyzed data, and written up study results.
If you are interested, please fill out this short survey before Sept. 30
This survey will help match students who are interested in your research and have the skills to help you move projects forward. Students have been encouraged to reach out to faculty with whom they share a research interest so don’t be surprised if a student contacts you on their own.
If you haven’t participated in 395 before but would like to learn more, please read the FAQs or check out our brand new, undergraduate research web page, or email Sarah Vos (sarah.vos@uky.edu).

The UK Center for Research on Violence Against Women (CRVAW) in partnership with CCTS is accepting applications for Pilot Projects. CCTS-CRVAW will co-fund this award.
The goal of the CCTS-CRVAW Pilot Program is to increase extramural funding at the University of Kentucky in areas of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, misconduct or harassment, other forms of interpersonal, family violence, or gun violence that disproportionally impact women, girls or sexual minority populations. We are particularly interested in funding translational research with a violence intervention or prevention focus. Because violence often co-occurs with substance use and other threats to mental health, we welcome intervention or prevention projects that focus on these violence-related outcomes.
The purpose of this funding mechanism is to support researchers with the resources to compete for externally funded grant awards by providing pilot or preliminary data to support grant applications or manuscripts. We encourage the inclusion of a specific notice of funding announcement or grant call.
The maximum award will be $50,000 which must be spent over 12 months. Extensions beyond the 12 months may be granted depending on the review of the progress to date.
This award is open to investigators in the UK faculty eligible to submit and receive externally funded grants. Early career applicants must identify a mentor or mentoring team to assist the investigator.

PCORI - Healthy Aging: Optimizing Physical and Mental Functioning Across the Aging Continuum |
Description: This targeted PFA on healthy aging will fund high-quality Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) studies that aim to optimize the physical and mental functioning of community-dwelling older adults and their caregivers across the aging continuum. This funding announcement encourages studies that demonstrate a clear evidence gap as endorsed by stakeholders and emphasize collaborative efforts that would facilitate successful implementation in healthcare systems and/or community-based care settings.
PCORI seeks to fund rigorous, high-quality, and impactful studies of three to five years in duration that address the following research questions that align with the four domains of interest in this targeted PFA.
- What are the most effective approaches to maintaining function and independence among older adults living in the community across the phases of the aging continuum?
- What are the most effective approaches to facilitating management of chronic conditions among older adults living in the community?
- What are the most effective approaches to supporting and maintaining the quality of life of older adults with significant functional (physical and/or cognitive) impairment?
- What are the most effective approaches to reducing caregiver burden and improving quality of life of caregivers of older adults across the phases of the aging continuum?
Letter of Intent deadline: October 4, 2022
Application deadline: January 10, 2023

PCORI - Telehealth to Optimize Management of Multiple Chronic Conditions among Vulnerable Populations in Primary Care
| |
Description: PCORI seeks to fund rigorous, high-quality, and impactful clinical studies that address the following research question: What is the comparative effectiveness of different approaches to incorporating access to and use of telehealth to optimize management of multiple chronic conditions in primary care, particularly among vulnerable populations?
This targeted funding announcement encourages multisite, individual, or cluster randomized controlled trials or well-specified natural experiments with mixed-methods design or robust process evaluation to support the possibility of widespread implementation. Applicants are also encouraged to conduct analyses to evaluate the comparative clinical effectiveness by telehealth modality as appropriate (e.g., audio-only versus video).
Letter of Intent deadline: October 4, 2022
Application deadline: January 10, 2023

PCORI - Improving Methods for Conducting Patient-Centered Outcomes Research
Description: PCORI seeks to fund rigorous, high-quality, and impactful clinical studies With this PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA), PCORI aims to fund studies that address high-priority methodological gaps in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and clinical comparative effectiveness research (CER).
PCORI seeks to fund projects that address important methodological gaps and lead to improvements in the strength and quality of evidence generated by PCOR/CER studies
PCORI has identified four programmatic priority areas.
- Methods Related to Ethical and Human Subjects Protections (HSP) Issues in PCOR/CER
- Methods to Improve Study Design
- Methods to Support Data Research Networks
- Methods to Improve the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in Clinical Research
The programmatic priority for artificial intelligence and machine learning replaced the priority for “Methods to Improve the Use of Natural Language Processing (NLP)”. This change signals PCORI’s broader interest in funding methodological research that seeks to improve how massive amounts of electronic health data (EHD) from a variety of sources can be appropriately integrated and analyzed and integrated into clinical care and healthcare delivery systems and uses to facilitate population health models and social determinants of health (SDoH) analyses to help support comparative effectiveness research. NLP-related proposals will still be considered
Letter of Intent deadline: October 4, 2022
Application deadline: January 10, 2023

The Engagement Award: Dissemination Initiative will give organizations and communities the opportunity to propose either:
-
Building Capacity for Dissemination projects to lay the groundwork for disseminating and implementing PCORI-funded research findings through organizations with strong ties to end-user audiences, such as patients, clinicians, communities, and others who can use this information to inform healthcare decisions.
-
Active Dissemination projects aimed at spreading awareness and increasing knowledge of PCORI-funded research findings, targeted directly to end-user audiences, such as patients, clinicians, communities, and others who can use this information to inform healthcare decisions.
Letter of Intent deadline: September 29, 2022
Application deadline, by invitation only; full proposals due: January 11, 2023
