The University of Kentucky’s Center for Computational Science (CCS) and ITS/Research Computing Infrastructure is hosting the 6th Annual Commonwealth Computational Summit (CCS) on October 4-5, 2022 with a special bonus AIM workshop on October 6th.

This “LIVE” two-day main Summit event will take place at the University of Kentucky Gatton Student Center Ballroom and meeting facilities. If you are interested in Advanced Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Data Science, Informatics/Bioinformatics, Complex Modeling and Simulation, Machine Learning, Future Technologies, Cloud Computing, or conventional High-Performance Computing, then come join us at the Commonwealth Computational Summit! The National Institutes of Health have recently recognized the ways climate-related weather events impact human health across the lifespan. To that end, they have established the Climate Change and Health Initiative with the intent to develop substantial lines of funding to investigate climate’s impact on all facets of human health. This includes increases in disease transmission, increases in heat-related injury from rising global temperatures, increases in food insecurity and poorer nutrition resulting from drought and lost crop yields, negative effects on mental health, as well as many other outcomes. All of these issues are exacerbated by the presence of structural racism and discrimination, putting underrepresented communities and individuals at greater risk for climate-related health impacts. 

The mission of this UK for KY Rapid Response Pilot Program is to support research across the spectrum of the University of Kentucky’s research portfolio from the perspective of how climate may impact your particular area of interest. 

This RFA is open to any faculty member in any UK college who can ask a research question through the lens of climate change and how it impacts human health, or what tools or technologies can be developed to help those affected by events related to climate change. 

The six priority areas NIH developed around climate and health as well as an infographic on the interplay between climate and many areas of human research. If you have any questions contact Joel Thompson ([email protected]).

• Rapid Response Pilot. Investigators may request up to $20,000 in direct research costs. The project period is 12 months. This award is for investigators at all stages of career development; early career, midlevel, and senior investigators, and is intended to stimulate innovation and support pilot studies that will lead to extramural funding.
• Mini-Grants. Mini-grant proposals may request up to $5,000. The project period is six months. This award is for investigators at all stages of career development and is intended to stimulate innovation and support pilot studies that will lead to extramural funding.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until October 31.  

Submissions will be reviewed and awards granted as applications are received; applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible because program funds might be depleted.

NICHD Research Education Programs (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Agency: NIH | Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) | National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)

Description: The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs.

To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on:

• Courses for Skills Development: For example, advanced courses in a specific discipline or research area, clinical procedures for research, or specialized research techniques.
• Research Experiences: Applications are strongly encouraged to include hands-on research experiences as part of the education program.

R25 programs may be proposed in any research area relevant to the mission of NICHD. The NICHD mission is to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. The NICHD's broad research portfolio includes research related to conception and pregnancy; typical and atypical development in childhood; childhood trauma, injury, and critical illness; the transition from adolescence to adulthood; reproductive health; rehabilitation; intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities; and population dynamics across the lifespan.

This FOA will support creative educational activities that focus primarily on research skills development. Although activities focused primarily on mentoring activities or professional skills development are not within the scope of this FOA, the informal mentoring activities and professional skills development that are usually associated with courses for research skills development are permitted.

 Closing Date: September 25, 2022; January 25, 2023; May 25, 2023

The NIH invites qualified health professionals who contractually agree to engage in NIH mission-relevant research for an average of at least 20 hours each week for at least two years, initially, to apply for an award in the Extramural LRP. The Extramural LRP repays up to $50,000 annually of a researcher's qualified educational debt in return for a commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research at a domestic, nonprofit, or government entity. Research funding from NIH is not required to participate in the Extramural LRP. LRP awards are based on an applicant's potential to build and sustain a research career.
