November 2023

Dear Colleagues,

As we make our way into the holiday season, we wanted to pause to give thanks to you, for your steadfast pursuit of knowledge and understanding, for your collaboration, and for being outstanding peers who make UCSF a great place to do research. In this month’s edition, we’d like to remind you about a few upcoming events and funding opportunities.

And as usual, we congratulate all our colleagues for their successes in their research!

All the best,

Diane Havlir, MD, Associate Chair for Clinical Research

David Erle, MD, Associate Chair for Biomedical Research

PRE-Proposal Application REview (PREPARE) Program

Get expert peer reviews for your R, K, and U proposals via the PREPARE program! See what reviewees had to say about the program below!

"The PREPARE program is a remarkable and indispensable resource that effectively enables the comprehensive assessment of NIH grant applications by expert reviewers before submission. This initiative serves as a crucial catalyst in enhancing the caliber and prospective influence of research proposals, empowering early career researchers and faculties to benefit from invaluable critiques and recommendations for enhancement. As a result, this program fosters a culture of innovation and scientific excellence, significantly increasing the likelihood of securing grants successfully." Rahul Kumar, PhD

Funding Opportunity Reminders

EXTRAMURAL Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellows Program

Applications are due by December 7

The Gilliam Fellows program is open to eligible pairs of graduate students and their faculty advisers who, together, embody scientific leadership, an important component of which is a commitment to building an equitable and inclusive science culture. The adviser-student pair must be studying scientific problems in biomedical sciences, life sciences, or biological questions in related disciplines.

The total amount awarded for the 2024 cohort will be $53,000 per year for up to three years. The grant will be paid to the institution, which in turn, will disburse funds to the adviser and fellow.

For questions, please contact Gilliam@hhmi.org.

SOM Bridge Funding Program

Applications are due by December 8

The Bridge Funding program provides up to 12 months of support for full-time faculty members, with independent research programs, who are experiencing a temporary loss of significant funding.

The program is intended to support applicants who face a funding gap between two extramural research grants (usually R01 or equivalent). Typically, applicants have been unsuccessful in a recent attempt to renew or replace a federal grant but are likely to be funded upon submission of a revised application, based on scores and reviewers’ comments.

Applications are due by 5 pm, December 8, 2023. For questions, please contact SOMbridgefunding@ucsf.edu.

The third call for applications for the UCSF ARCHES Mid-Career Development Program for Research Faculty is now open. This unique program is intended to promote workforce equity and is open to applicants across all schools. This is a great opportunity to support outstanding mid-career mentors (see current and prior awardees here).

During this review cycle, up to three faculty members will be selected for this two-year award. Historically excluded research faculty who are committed to working on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications are due via email to Claudine Catledge by 5 pm, February 13, 2024. For questions, please contact Claudine Catledge.

EXTRAMURAL The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H)

Applications are due by March 14

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is a new federal agency that supports team approaches for solving major health challenges. Rather than supporting research on specific diseases, ARPA-H will support high-risk, high-consequence programs designed to improve health for everyone.

To learn more about ARPA-H and how to apply to become a program manager or respond to a BAA, visit the UCSF Research Development Office ARPA-H website, which includes links to videos and slide decks with more information.
