WSU receives NSF EPSCoR award
Dr. Gisuk Hwang , titled his proposed project  Tailored Flow Boiling Mechanisms Using 3D Printed Multifunctional Wick Structures.

Efficient and sustainable electrical power generation is critical to the U.S. energy supply/security and economy, and it is dominated by thermo-electric systems as 83 percent of the electricity in 2018 was generated from fossil fuels and nuclear energy. The efficiency of electrical power production is bottle-necked by the performance of a steam generator, i.e., flow boiler, which is caused by local premature water dry-out from excessive unwanted vapor blankets. To address this challenge, the research will incorporate a multifunctional wick structure for effective liquid-vapor separation, to simultaneously advance current technical limits on heat transfer coefficient and maximum heat transfer rate per given surface area without creating a significant hydraulic pressure drop. A key success of the proposed research requires an advanced manufacturing approach for the proposed multifunctional wick structure with complex geometries. Hwang will conduct the research working with a collaborator at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL) using a state-of-the-art metallic 3D printer with a high resolution at Nano-Engineering Research Core Facility. Also, this fellowship will greatly strengthen the collaboration between the WSU and UNL. The obtained new knowledge will be implemented into the education plans, which will empower the future engineering workforce.

Thanks to Andrew Swindle, WSU's hydrogeology professor, the university now has a hydrogeology field site for students and researchers. This site is the only one of its size in Kansas and the surrounding states.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released updated rankings for university research and development (R&D) expenditures, and Wichita State has held its position as the top university in the country for industry-funded aeronautical R&D with a total of $39 million in fiscal year 2018.
A team of researchers from WSU-NIAR, the Air Force Research Lab, RP+M, Texas A&M University and the Federal Aviation Administration received one of four coveted Defense Manufacturing Technology Achievement Awards at the Defense Manufacturing Conference. The team, working together through America Makes, received the Technology Enabler Award for their project “Qualification Framework for High-Performance, Low-Variability Additive Manufacturing Parts.”
Martin Ratcliffe, adjunct professor in the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College, teaches students that space and the people who study it aren’t all that far away.
