MD with Research Honors Program Chair
Seema Singh, PhD, Professor, Department of Pathology, Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine, Mitchell Cancer Institute, has been appointed as the new Chair of the MD with Research Honors program and committee. Dr. Singh is replacing Dr. Jonathan Scammell, who has served as chair of the Honors Committee for many years.
The M.D. with Research Honors Program is for medical students who desire to conduct biomedical research over the course of their medical school training. Many students become interested in more in-depth research opportunities after participating in the Medical Student Summer Research Program. Students who complete the program requirements will have the notation "Research With Honors" on their College of Medicine transcript and diploma.

Robert Barrington, PhD (Associate Professor, Microbiology & Immunology) has accepted the position to be the new ORET Director. Unlike the co-Directorship model that has prevailed for several years, this is now a single Directorship position. Through his teaching and his research program, Dr. Barrington has been an active contributor to the graduate program for many years. He currently serves as a block leader for IDL-581, and teaches in several other IDL courses within the Lung Biology and Infectious Disease and Host Defense graduate tracks. He also contributes to medical education and research, including serving as Chair of the Medical Student Summer Research Program and as a member of the MD with Research Honors Committee.

Number of R01 Submissions with Modular Budgets
Researchers may be interested in recent trends in the College regarding submission of R01 applications with modular budgets. This follows a memo issued by the Associate Dean for Research in May 2021 encouraging investigators to submit detailed budgets rather than modular due to the declining value of a modular award relative to the true costs of conducting biomedical research. Since then, the percentage of R01 submissions with modular budgets has indeed fallen from 25% in FY21 to 11% for FY23
(year-to-date). Meanwhile, the average value of an R01 award has increased from $256,443 in FY21 (directs) to $342,620 for FY23 (year-to-date).

The most current NIH cycle has been a busy one for the College of Medicine, with the following grant applications submitted (or soon-to-be submitted):
1 P01, 1 R35, 7 R01s, and 4 R21s. In addition, there were 2 submissions for administrative supplements for ongoing R01 awards and two R01 submissions where a COM faculty member is a collaborating co-Investigator. There have also been recent submissions to other agencies, including applications to the Breast Cancer Foundation of Alabama, DOD, and the NSF. This level of activity is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and grant administrators in seeking to increase extramural support for research.
