Cleantech is Big in the Triangle, and She's Helping Lead the Way

Susan Sanford believes cleantech will become one of the fastest-growing job sectors in the Triangle as companies and cities try to use less energy to save money and reduce their environmental impact. Sanford, 43, was named executive director of the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster last year. Here she talks about the industry, and how it could save you money if there’s a water leak in your home.
DC Power: Two Energy Birds, One Shining Stone

Energy resiliency, especially in relatively isolated communities, can largely be achieved by local production and distribution. In the mid to low latitudes, solar intensity will favor solar electricity. And it is getting cheaper by the day. A recent winning tender for utility scale solar in India came in at around 3.6 cents per kWh. That is cheaper than many coal plants, certainly any newly constructed ones.

2018 Cleantech Connect Career Fair
The Cleantech and Energy Career Fair is focused on providing employers an opportunity to promote job opportunities and career information to job seekers, skilled professionals, and students who are seeking internships or are interested in learning more about the types of technologies and innovative solutions companies are engaged in within the cleantech and energy sector.

Access to the career fair is free for students and job seekers, but registration is required. Exhibition opportunities are available for employers.

Duke University Energy Week - Spark Career Event
On November 7, the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster sponsored the Duke University Energy Week's Spark Career Event. This event was an opportunity for students looking for jobs/internships to connect with employers in the cleantech space. Some RTCC member companies including Sensus (pictured here) and SAS were on hand to tell students about opportunities at their companies.
Pittsboro Board of Commissioners Meeting
RTCC's own Emmit Owens spoke to the Pittsboro Board of Commissioners early in November about the cleantech innovation taking place at the Chatham Park development.
Conservatives for Clean Energy: NC's Corporate Clean Energy Champions
On November 14, the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster attended the Conservatives for Clean Energy's annual award recognition ceremony. This event was an opportunity to recognize North Carolina businesses and policymakers driving positive change in the cleantech space. During the event, RTCC's Board Chairman Gary Rackliffe of ABB, spoke about grid modernization and energy storage trends (pictured left).
Smart City Expo World Congress
From November 14 - 16, Susan Sanford attended the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. During the trip, Susan participated in the USA pavilion on the expo hall floor to represent the Research Triangle region and the more than 350 companies that call it home.
New York Times ClimateTECH Conference
The Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster recently attended the New York Times' ClimaTECH conference in San Francisco, CA. RTCC was a promotional partner of the event and brought along a delegation of board member companies including ABB, Field2Base, and PowerSecure. During the conference, RTCC staff member Matt Abele had the opportunity to place the Research Triangle region in the spotlight by posing a question to California Governor Jerry Brown about regional economic development.

While attending the conference, RTCC staff also had the opportunity to stop by Powerhouse Solar in Oakland, CA to talk about opportunities in cleantech entrepreneurship.
Cleantech Innovators Holiday Networking
On December 6, the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster hosted a holiday networking event at Bond Brothers Beer Company in Cary, NC. Nearly 50 cleantech influencers and industry representatives were in attendance!
