Scientist Offers Better Solution to Protect Manatees
New research conducted at  FAU has found that the very laws enacted to slow down boats in manatee habitats may actually be doing more harm than good to the species. The study published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America noted that slower boats were more difficult for manatees to hear and therefore avoid.

To address this problem, Edmund Gerstein, Ph.D., director of marine mammal research in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, has co-developed an innovative alerting device that will project signals tailored to manatees' hearing. Read NBC News' coverage of the story here.
