Updated facilities and administrative cost rates available for sponsored project budget development
|
|
Facilities and administrative cost rates, or F&A, also known as indirect costs or overhead, apply to all sponsored research, and scholarly projects at the university — including those from federal, nonfederal and private sponsors. F&A pays for expenses that cannot be easily assigned to a specific grant, such as electricity, heat, light, accounting services, human resources, or administrative costs such as procurement, asset management, regulatory compliance and department research administration support. The federal government’s process of determining and approving F&A rates involves extensive data gathering and complicated calculations associated with related institutional expenditures, FTE and space allocations, just to name a few. The calculated rate includes building depreciation, equipment depreciation, and operations and maintenance. Administrative costs are capped at 26%.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has extended the current F&A rates for K-State that will apply to sponsored project budgets through June 30, 2023. The current rates are summarized below:

Please continue using the current rates for sponsored project budget development purposes. Many sponsors will approach K-State to confirm current F&A rates as part of final award negotiations. When this occurs, the
current F&A rate details and a downloadable PDF of the rate agreement may be found online.
As a reminder, consistent with federal regulations, current F&A rates will apply for the competitive period of currently funded grants; that is, grants will remain as originally awarded for continuing projects that are in their current competitive segment (i.e., in year 3 of a 5-year project period in which Year 1 was awarded at the then current rate). When a renewal proposal budget is developed for the next competitive segment/project period, the new rates will be required at that time.

Laboratory Safety Renovation Program proposals that address safety or compliance issues within or related to research or teaching laboratory space will be accepted until March 27. Proposals require an estimate of costs for labor and materials from Facilities. Cost estimates must be requested from Facilities by
February 28, 2020 by contacting the Facilities Help Desk at 532-6389.

Seeking faculty participation in forming collaborative convergent research teams
|
|
How can K-State lead
convergent research
to solve the most pressing societal challenges? The Office of Research Development and the College of Engineering, with support from the Office of Educational Innovation and Evaluation, are interested in forming strategically-oriented convergent research teams for near- and long-term opportunities and relevant funding agency program submissions. Our intent is to leverage university-wide strengths into multidisciplinary teams focused on solving
complex global problems
.
University research faculty in all disciplines are invited to participate in four one-hour sessions to ascertain how K-State can lead convergent research. The sessions will utilize an action-based approach to forming interdisciplinary research collaboration. Participants will identify opportunities and define an action plan that results in a white paper.

Kansas Science Communication Initiative offers Science Communication Awards
|
|
- Faculty and postdoc Science Communication Award: $1,000 to be used toward research and creative inquiry activities.
- Student Science Communication Award: $500 with no use restrictions; open to undergraduate and graduate students.
For this award, science communication is defined as the exchange of information and viewpoints about science through diverse formats to:
- Study the public's perceptions of science — e.g., surveys, focus groups, deliberative workshops.
- Foster the public's understanding and use of science and scientific methods — e.g., policy initiatives, science festivals and experiential events, articles and interviews, websites and social media.
- Create public conversations and partnerships that advance scientific discovery and address critical social problems.
Awards will be selected by the Kansas Science Communication Initiative based on the quantity and impact of applicants' work in science communication. Awards will be presented at a reception on April 16, 2020.

Rivers is a K-State graduate and currently the assistant manager for outreach and special projects for the Institute of International Education. He will offer insight regarding the application and screening process, and hopes to converse about Fulbright proposal ideas that you might be developing.

Ohio University will host a National Endowment for the Humanities, or NEH Application Writing Workshop.

NEH conducts these grant writing workshops to raise awareness of funding opportunities available in the humanities and to increase the number of quality applications. The workshop is free and open to Ohio University faculty and graduate students, as well as to scholars from any other institution or community in Ohio or surrounding states who want to learn more about NEH and how to compete for NEH grants.
