The Kress Foundation’s History of Art grants program supports scholarly projects that will enhance the appreciation and understanding of European works of art and architecture from antiquity to the early 19th century.
The National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers Program provides a structure for academic researchers to conduct fundamental, pre-competitive research of shared interest to industry and government organizations. These organizations pay membership fees to a consortium so that they can collectively envision and fund research, with at least 90% of Member funds allocated to the direct costs of these shared research projects.

Welcome back to a new year and a new semester! We are still in the grip of COVID-19, as is obvious from the fact we are starting the semester fully online and are still in COVID Phase 3 and the same conditions governing research continue to apply. Nevertheless, the news about the vaccines and the fact that we are beginning to get K-Staters vaccinated is very encouraging.
Our hard-working research administration team continues to work primarily remotely, working with faculty to get proposals submitted, awards set up, compliance needs met, and help us respond to the ever-changing regulatory environment. Researchers will be notified in a timely way of new requirements.
You may notice a different photograph accompanying this column. I have been selected as the interim vice president for research, replacing our colleague Peter Dorhout, who has moved on to the VPR position at Iowa State effective this week. I will continue to lead the Office of Research Development during the interim period.
For those of you who are new to K-State, here is a bit of background. I am a professor in the Division of Biology and have previously served as associate dean for research in the College of Arts and Sciences and most recently, senior associate vice president for research. If you have questions about your research or our research enterprise in general, please feel free to reach out by email to me or any of the OVPR staff.

In this episode, we welcome Dr. Vaishali Sharda, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering at Kansas State University. Her research focuses on the complex dynamics of food-energy-water systems. Vaishali’s modeling is based on farm management scenarios and integrates agro-hydrologic models and climate data. This research couples human activity and natural systems with applications in sustainable agriculture, water resources management and applied hydrology with particular interest in the Ogallala Aquifer and farming in the Great Plains.

Faculty Development Award and University Small Research Grant programs now open for proposals
The Office of Research Development announces the Spring 2021 Faculty Development Awards, or FDA, and University Small Research Grants, or USRG, call for proposals for K-State tenured or tenure-track faculty who are interested in receiving assistance in their scholarly activities and professional development.
The Faculty Development Awards program provides support for travel to international meetings — primarily at international locations — or to meet with program officers from potential external sponsors. Due to travel constraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA program will, for the current funding round cover either registration expenses to present at a virtual professional meeting, or travel and registration costs to present at an in-person professional meeting, but these awards will be contingent on the in-person meetings actually occurring with funds not being released until this can be confirmed.
The University Small Research Grants program is a seed grant program to support early research, scholarly activity, and other creative efforts.

The Office of the Vice President for Research is offering a third session in its series of interactive web sessions for researchers. Paul Lowe, Office of PreAward Services, and Chris Brandt, K-State Innovation Partners, will examine the topic of data security in the context of working with industry partners. They will discuss cultural differences between university and industry and provide tips and resources to enable researchers to be effective collaborators with the private sector.

NEH Fellowships 2021 Information Webinar |

The National Endowment for the Humanities is now accepting applications for the 2021 Fellowships program.
The NEH will be offering a live webinar for administrators and prospective applicants to introduce the program, describe the application process, and offer application writing suggestions. There will be a chance to ask questions and captions will be available. The webinar will be recorded so that others can watch it later.
NEH Fellowships are competitive awards granted to individual scholars pursuing projects that embody exceptional research, rigorous analysis, and clear writing. Fellowships provide recipients time to conduct research or to produce books, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, e-books, digital materials, translations with annotations or a critical apparatus, or critical editions. Projects may be at any stage of development. The maximum award amount is $60,000, and the application deadline is April 14, 2021. For more information, please see the program webpage.
NEH invites applications from scholars in all humanities disciplines, and it encourages submissions from independent scholars and junior scholars.

The Phase 3 trial of another investigational coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine has begun enrolling adult volunteers. The randomized, placebo-controlled trial will enroll approximately 30,000 people at approximately 115 sites in the United States and Mexico. It will evaluate the safety and efficacy of NVX-CoV2373, a vaccine candidate developed by Novavax, Inc., of Gaithersburg, Maryland. nih.gov
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Moderna, Inc., a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for its COVID-19 vaccine, which was co-developed with scientists at the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). This innovative and monumental partnership has enabled NIH and Moderna to develop a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine within the span of a year that will be manufactured and distributed across the U.S. nih.gov
In a U.S. National Science Foundation-funded study published in Physical Review D, physicists Luca Comisso of Columbia University and Felipe Asenjo of the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile have found a new way to extract energy from black holes by breaking and rejoining magnetic field lines near the event horizon, the point at which nothing, not even light, can escape a black hole's gravitational pull. nsf.gov
